An apple fell from the tree above him and landed with a thunk in the ground next to him. Tamhas turned to look at the glossy green and tender flesh of the fruit and then, slowly, turned his head up into the tree.
He expected to see one of his siblings there, grinning down at him and waving. He expected to see Kenna, if he was honest, her flaxen hair pinned up and her dress caught in a tree branch. She was always playing games. But as his eyes went high into the branches he saw nothing more than a crow staring back at him. Tamhas was just a little disappointed, but never the less he reached out for the apple and murmured a word of thanks to the crow who had provided him with this snack.
He bit into the hard skin of the gorgeous green apple and crunched. The fragrant juices filled his mouth and he closed his eyes for a moment to savour the sweet offering. Chewing several times, he swallowed and whistled to himself as he rose from his place on the ground. He moved, just a few metres to the next tree, to where his horse was tied up. Reaching out Tamhas stroked the stallions bay coloured mane and offered the creature a share in the fruit.
“Lets go see how the old man’s hunt went shall we?” He spoke to the animal, hauling himself into the saddle and letting the animal take the rein a little. With no more than a touch from Tamhas, the horse snorted and set of quickly, galloping across the meadow and scaring rabbits down their holes. The beast sounded like rolling thunder and Tamhas cheered, cawing to himself and the crow in the tree.
He steered them back towards their home, towards the stables were he looked for sign of his father’s return from that days hunt. Tamhas had chosen not to go with him today, this was a rare thing, there was something about the way his father had held his shoulders at breakfast that suggested there was something going on under his skin and a little solitude would straighten it all out. Tamhas hoped, now he returned, that his father would be ready to discuss whatever the matter was.
Handing the big bay beast to a stable boy, he headed up through the kitchens towards the main drawing rooms.
