Martine would have to agree, honestly, that the king's decision had been a good one. Yes, it caused some problems, but having Nicolette as queen would be far better than having Stephane as king. She loved her brother dearly, and they did share some wonderful times together, but there was a cold quality about him that she couldn't explain. The throne would have suited him ill, and all of Archades would have paid the price.
Talk shifted to Antoinette, and even Martine couldn't blame Juliette for rolling her eyes. The older Deveraux could difficult, to say the least. She'd also noticed the difference in Mariette and agreed that she didn't like it. Her cousin was usually so bright and happy, even if she was on the quiet side, as Martine was. She smiled when the other girl described what she wanted in life, at least for now. "Well, you certainly are good at it. Far better than me, I'm afraid." Martine lived a little too much by the rules sometimes, but it was in her nature. "At least we can share the occasional adventure together, though."
Yes, it was odd for a woman to be leading a house in most areas of Archades, but Nicolette was doing it, so perhaps it was less odd these days. "He seemed a nice young man, though I think Antoinette would get a long well with them. They seem to like the finer things in life, and they've no qualms about showing it." The lad had been dressed rather extravagtantly, even for a ball. "I danced with Lord Nicolaus, and he seemed pleasant enough, though. And as for inviting others to ride with us, I think it would be a lovely idea! And a wonderful way to meet new people. We should plan something."
