”While I appreciate your chivalry, and that you are simply using the lessons you have been taught, I do not appreciate the boldness of your touch, please do not reach out for me again.” She was trying to state it politely as possible. Lia did not wish to upset him either, it would do her confidence no favours to engage with someone and cause offense to them. She did not often leave her home in Lavender Quarter, and today her uncle had sent her packing out of the house. His expectation was that she mingle with people, learn more about being a countess and more about securing their lands – he did not expect for her to cause offense or start a fight. But it was clear, for she was no good at hiding it, that his touch had frightened her and she had snapped her hand away from him in self-preservation.
”…I just feel…protective of you…”
”You have no need to feel protective of me, my guards are well trained and well paid to ensure they manage my protection.” But as his attention turned back to his food, she felt a little like she was being too cold towards him. She was not a cold woman, by nature, she was generally a much warmer, much friendly person but he had done nothing other than catch her off her guard. She glanced down at her hands, where they were folded in her lap, and said; ”Let us start that moment again – a do-over, if you will?” She offered him a smile, and reintroduced herself to him- to prove an opportunity for this conversation to go better than it had.
”I am Lia Orsini, Lord Horatio, Countess of Bondesano, of Calandria.”
He would do well not to mention her father this time. Or, obviously, make an attempt to take her hand.
