Given all that had transpired of late, it was only understandable that Niccolo wanted to get out of the city for a short while. The politics, while necessary, could be very draining all the same. The mountains surrounding Duefuemi provided much needed solace and solitude. Indeed, he had already shared with Elena some of the secrets of the mountains, including the mysterious ruby cave. That little adventure made him smile fondly. She had enjoyed it, he thought.
With that in mind, he made requests of his servants to gather information about the area surrounding Bordelaix for things of a similar nature. The true mountains of the area were too far away for a day trip. That and he did not necessarily want to venture into the territory of Vasile. It was too unstable. Fortunately, his servants reported back informing him of a network of caves and ruins on the western side of the lake. This intrigued Niccolo.
He informed the steward to clear their schedules for the day and fortunately, the weather was mostly cooperating. There were large, fluffy clouds lazily drifting though the sky and the morning held a bit of a chill to it. Yet, the openness of the sky promised warmth later in the day. He had the horses prepared for the day, having one saddled with a packed lunch, and he suggested to Elena that she wear clothing that was easy to move around in. That also meant it might get a little dirty.
The ride alongside the lake was pleasant and quiet. There existed little traffic, horse or foot. Eventually, they veered slightly away from the lake toward what appeared, from a distance, to be several copses and thickets. Nature was hiding something, however, and this became increasingly evident as they drew closer. The trees and bushes were not alone. They were accompanied by thick, white columns of columns. Once they might have been considered ornate and beautiful, but now they were withered husks of their former selves.
The columns were curiously arranged throughout the area as their seemed to be immediately discernable pattern to their placement. Furthermore, some columns had completely different designs. A different architect? A different area? Regardless, they all seemed to point toward a place that was enshrouded by mist and mystery. A faint howling sound gave clues as to what it likely was.
Niccolo smiled over at Elena gamely.
