The change of subject worked to restore the lady's composure, Remy noted, her color returning and the spark once more lighted in her eyes. He was relieved to see she was no longer on the verge of illness, feeling the altered state towards confidence and greater ease as her posture grew straight. A subtle glance to the side confirmed the avid interest etched into her delicate features, intriguing him. There was a most unusual side to the Lady Elisabeta, Remy was swiftly discovering.
Aware of the accompanying knight's unease, the Count took care to move slowly and conduct himself with unexceptionable courtesy. The chances were beyond good that the man would render a report to the Duke, a man with whom Remy intended to conduct business, thus he would do nothing to risk the man's noteworthy ire, not that he would ever treat the lady beside him with anything but the utmost courtesy.
Remy Blackthorne might be accounted a villain in many shadowy corners, but he was still a nobleman and thus a gentleman. Rumors were not fact.
The excitement in her tone when she accepted made him smile gently, amused by her eagerness. Remy was aware that the ladies in Seravino were not encouraged to involve themselves in much beyond the management of house and home, to stand as efficient, welcoming hostesses and provide a bevy of children. He had mounting suspicions that the Lady Elisabeta desired far more of her life; perhaps he had found an unexpected jewel in her. Deciding to indulge and test in simultaneous effort, he arched a brow. "You are not permitted access to your family's financial ledgers, my lady?"
Well, well, well... he would see just how capable the lady was of reading and comprehending the ledgers, and what questions she asked. If she fulfilled his suspicions, then Elisabeta Montefiore was going to be the answer to an unspoken prayer indeed.
