Their duties kept them in Vasile, providing protection to the five Deveraux princesses and the one non-military Deveraux prince. However, because so many of their number were present in the Romanov duchy, the three were not required to stand guard every minute of every day, thankfully. Too much time on guard made for unintentional laxness and a lack of attention to the minute details that kept their charges safe night or day.
Informed on the journey to Vasile that he was called upon to mentor the newest member of the Guard, Tory accepted the honor with humility. The man, taken from the ranks of the archers, was common-born, but had skills that could prove useful, particularly during the royal family's travels throughout the kingdom. Naturally, the man, called Nicholas Miller, would require some additional polish if he was to assume duty in proximity to Their Most Royal Highnesses. Perhaps, on further reflection, that was why Sir Bastien assigned Nick to him. Tory prided himself on his impeccable manners, well-practiced as they were. He had also stood as a mentor to Sir Tristan, welcoming the chance to provide assistance and guidance to the younger knights.
Waiting for Tristan in one of the numerous courtyards to conduct their morning sword drills, Tory had left word for Master Miller to join them. The man needed to improve his sword skills, Sir Bastien informed him, as well as acquire the needed etiquette required of the Royal Guard. He stood calmly, dressed in a faded tunic that would stand up to the rigors of practice and effort before he bathed and attired himself for the remainder of the day. His sword rested with its point in the dirt, precisely placed between his feet with his hands resting atop the pommel as his eyes focused on the doorway by which he anticipated their arrival.
Where were they? Promptness was a knightly virtue, after all!
