"It's always a bad time with Rizio, I fear. He despises mornings, tends to work too hard and then drink too much of an evening. And he is not always one for company Depending on what you wish to learn beyond sailing, I can recommend one of my other brothers, who might prove more... congenial."
Horatio nodded and smiled. "Thank you My Lord, that is a welcome offer. I would like to know how to be a good captain, one that the men want to work for out of loyalty and rather than out of fear. I know how I think one goes about being a good captain but I admit I'm likely mistaken."
"He is your father. I understand your wish to be the one to speak with him, and gladly defer to that intention."
"It would be best I think. I believe it would be harder to take someone as a man when they have someone else do the talking for them as if they were a child. Physical ailments aside anyway." Sometimes severe colds could cause one to be unable to speak above a whisper, if at all. He knew that from experience.
"I would remind him that this was a course on which Emilia initially set you with the intention that when you rose to your rank, you would possess the experience on both sides of the trading tables - first as sailor, then as merchant. And that such lessons are best acquired in a practical, rather than theoretical manner. There is no better instructor than experience. If you must, remind him in turn that you are a man and of age to make your own decisions. While you would prefer his blessing, you do not strictly need it."
Tio thought about that for a moment before replying. "I agree Sire, that reminding him of that should be left as a last resort. He is still my father and I do not wish to alienate or antagonize him, such would do no good in the long view. But I would prefer his blessing, as you have guessed."
He looked at the Duke in earnest. "Thank you Sire, for speaking with me and for all your advice. I wish only to do right by my family and by Yourself." It was his territory after all!
