Mariette didnât intend matters to come forth so sharply, but she could be tenacious when she put her mind to it. When she sensed a secret, she did her best to subtly ferret it out, however reticent the other person was. The longer she spent around Rose, the more she was convinced the Montefiore lady had more than a few secrets behind her eyes. Like the kitten Rose pegged her, she wanted to know what those secrets were.
Hearing what Rose said about blood, she paused and turned to look back at her friend warily. Just how did Rose know this? If Mariette wanted proof that Rose had secrets, there it was â the woman had a maddening habit of throwing out these little comments without revealing the source of her knowledge or elaborating. âAh⊠good to know, I think?â For once, she resisted the drive to poke at Rose about it and demand to know how she knew. Somehow, the kittenish princess had a feeling that she was being tested against just such a situation, a sensation she didnât much care for.
âYes,â she replied shortly, shrugging a shoulder before she shot Rose an odd look. Vanity was not the Montefiore ladyâs vice, not even remotely. On more than a few occasions, Mariette felt like the woman was poking sly fun at her and behaving in a way she thought Mariette expected. âMaybe. Iâll have to think on it. But we should probably be getting back. Iâm sure Nicolette and Antoinette will not want us out much longer.â She didnât wait for a response, putting down the vial as she gestured to the guards to follow, her sunny mood clouded over. Mariette felt the need to be alone and think over everything.
