Annemarie’s arrival barely registered in his thoughts. So virulent was his anger that it threatened to consume him whole. Though he was a military man highly skilled in the arts and science of combat, he was very careful to let emotion guide his hand. That was effective on the battlefield, but the gardens of Lockewood were hardly such a place. Casper may have been reminding him of battlefields long past, but he refrained. He refrained most strongly.
The Marshal swiveled his intense gaze on Annemarie, his tongue about to lash out with harsh words and a reminder of her place. Indeed, Jean-Luc did not care an iota about the tongues of others in Lockewood. Courtiers were the damned worst in his eyes. All they did was whisper harsh rumors and pat themselves on the back with sickening displays of self-congratulation. There was a reason that he truly hated court. It was all a farce.
Yet, when Casper spoke again, the words cut through him like knives of the sharpest edge. Jean-Luc set his eyes on him again, though they did not help him process Casper’s words. Kill him when he was a babe? Jean-Luc almost found himself vehemently agreeing with him when he realized the true horror of his words. The dragon visibly stilled, his expression locked in a fugue of rage, revulsion and confusion. “I-“ he blinked, “I would never-“
This battle had been lost. He had made a grave error on many levels. A deluge of shame suddenly rushed through him. What was he doing? How could he be doing this? Already, he could think of many that would be disappointed in his behavior. Without another word, the man made his departure. His steps were determined, but his shoulders set low…
