He had delayed the inevitable long enough but could not in good conscience conceal the facts from his wife any longer. Upon speaking with Isabella and reassuring his sister that their family was protected and safe, Antonin returned to the inn and requested that Catalina join him for a private discussion. Mindful of his wife's tendency towards emotional reactions, he drew her into one of the newly cleaned and restored chambers, sending their cousins and siblings elsewhere so that she could likely shout at him without fear of eavesdropping or interruption.
Sighing, he braced himself as he secured the door behind them, leaving a guard on duty to stave off anyone who dared to interrupt them. As it was, Antonin had a feeling he might need to restrain Catalina from rushing off once he put the information forth, but that was the nature of marriage. Knowing the nature of the relationship between Catalina and her sister, he would not be surprised by nearly any reaction that came from his Duchess. And it was time to man up and speak to her on it.
Facing Catalina with his courage firmly in hand, he drew in a breath and spoke directly to the point. "I met with Lord Montefiore today regarding the attack on their family. There was some news that affects you directly, and I wanted to relay it to you privately, my lady." Coming closer, Antonin reached for her hand and continued quietly, "He told me that the attack on them went somewhat differently. They sought to capture and abduct your sister." Having put it forth, he fell silent, waiting for her reaction, his eyes filled with concern as they rested on her face. Antonin could only hope she did not react too strongly, for the sake of the child she carried.
