She had not seen Oscar for nearly nine years. But those eyes of his and the softness of his smile was more than recognisable to her. Growing up, though older of the two, Leona had relied on Oscar for everything. As an only child, without brother or sister, she had not learnt at an early age how best to play with others. And her cousins were always so bold and brash and bright- that Leona had often quarrelled with them. But Oscar had been the light of her life, her best friend and her most trusted companion. When she had been sent away, at sixteen, to be married, Oscar had been without the complexities of his manhood and she had missed him dearly, had not crossed paths with him since.
The woman found herself come to a halt as she released the man, who stood from his chair in the tea house, was just that boy she had left behind. For a moment, her thoughts of Sofia, Flavia and Florence were much forgotten. If coming here had been nothing but trouble for Ona, this moment made everything much sweeter.
”Oscar?” The word came out under her breath, in something of a whisper as she could not seem to find her speech.
And she meandered her way through the tables to take his cheeks in her hands and to look at his properly. ”Oscar!” The woman smiled, a smile so full of joy at this moment that her coolness was melted completely away and her wonderful, sparkling eyes were brimmed with happy-tears.
Well, Sforza’s were known for their dramatic flair, after all.
