"As I am not in need of any spell, what would you prefer that I call you then Good Mother?"
”Call me, Mable, child, for it is my name after all and I am well practiced in responding to it.” With each interaction, Matthew could see his friend growing in confidence. It was good to see and he made himself comfortable enough around them both that he poured out teas and just engaged with their conversation in shared smiles. He caught Christina glancing at him, saw her smiling as it graced her soft and beautiful face and found it automatic that he should smile in return.
”Well, for all his obvious faults, he’s a good boy.”
”So I am learning.”
”Wait, hold up.” He seemed to realise a little too late what it was she was in fact smiling about. ”What ‘obvious faults’ do you think I have?” He asked, glancing between both women in pretence of being offended. Regardless of his words, he placed cups of warm and sweet-honeyed tea before both of the women and kissed the side of Mable’s head, as if her son, as he added; ”I’m a wonderful person, thank you kindly, faults- my ass – I don’t have obvious faults.”
”I see your return to Estersea has brought back your fowl tongue, Matthew – too much time spent in sheep dirt?” Mable scolded, but was done with a smile.
” "That is where the problem comes in. I don't know exactly what it is I'm searching for. I just know that when I see just the right thing, I'll know it."
”Well, look around dear, there are lots of draws in this building with treasures in to be found- anything you like, from one of my dresses to a roll of ribbon you find in the back of a basket somewhere- I am sure we can work out a way to make it yours, so you may give it to your sister. I am sure, if you are willing to glance about, you will find something – and don’t fret about moving things about, or making a mess”
