She could hardly sleep for the thoughts racing through her head. Ideas and plans, a little fear and plenty of doubt, and a good dollop of excitement consumed her through the wakeful hours of the night after the meeting with Nicolette in which she'd been given the equivalent of marching orders. By now, Mariette felt sure that Jean-Luc had apprised her cousin Marie-Louise of the matter, and that left it to her to talk with Olympe and to begin laying the plans for their departure.
Waiting until she was confident that the ladies involved were awake and decent (and probably at breakfast), she sent notes asking her cousins to meet with her in one of the sitting rooms in the royal wing of the palace. There they could openly talk of plans and what they would need, making lists and dividing tasks to ensure that each of them stood to benefit from the opportunity awaiting them in Vasile. Nicolette was right, it would be a lot of work, but Mariette welcomed it. Tournaments and balls were all well and good, but she wanted to do something real, to make a mark beyond playing at being a Princess and waiting for a marriage. She had a feeling her cousins would agree.
Standing now in the sitting room as she waited for them and for her ladies in waiting to join her, the room was set up to suit her purposes. A small table holding parchment, pens and ink waited for the lists to be scribed, part of a half-circle of chairs where the five of them would sit and speak amongst themselves. There was no nonsense of rank or file here; Mariette wanted everyone to speak their minds freely and welcomed the ideas she hoped would flow.
There was not much time, but proper prior planning could make a lot of difference. Time to get to work!
