If Ra had an answer for Rik he didn’t give it. It was unclear what his thoughts were as his brother spoke about his experience on a ship or about paying a price so the girls didn’t have too. He did nothing but walk away as he had promised to do. Admittedly, he was glad that his brother followed, regardless of the reason.
What Ra did think, of course, was a lot. He knew his place and he knew he had spoken more than too bluntly to his brother for the last few moments. He liked to think that Rik appreciated his honesty (even if not always at the time of hearing it) but he knew that there was a line even he could not cross with his brother. Thus, he kept his thoughts to himself. And what was he thinking? Well, Ra knew nothing of being on a boat. The only time he had really done so he had been tied to a mast and sent out on a small, slowly sinking raft. Ra didn’t like the water, he didn’t like sailing and his master had knocked the boy out, tied him up and sent him to learn a lesson. Or die. Fortunately Ra learn the mean of escaping the situation and made it back to land. He had been in bed for three days afterwards with a terrible sickness, a sickness that had worried his family terrible but he kept the secret of where he had been. No, he did not imagine life on a boat was pleasant. But it was free. At least, free from the noose that Rik so aggressively spoke about. He wasn’t the one dealing with family drama when he was on the boat- Ra had been.
They all had their duty. They all had their roles. Rik needed to accept it. Stop mopping about it. Move the hell on from this and man the fuck up. He had done this to himself, no one had done this to him or for him. He only had himself to blame, so he needed to suck it up and start acting like a man. Ra, who had the emotional understanding of a teaspoon, didn’t appreciate the attitude his brother had on the matter. There were people, all across the land, in much more severe situations.
As they walked, and he paused for his brother to walk beside him allowing Titus ahead a few paces, Ra decided to talk on a subject more neutral. Business. Specifically the business of their sister and cousins. ”So.” He glanced, with black eyes at his brother, ”Alexa mentioned a picnic soon…?”
