The kiss appeared to startle Nick every bit as much as it had her. Looking up into his eyes, Gabrielle could see the momentary alarm in their depths as he fought down panic and thoughts flooded his mind. It was true, she'd known little in the way of kindness or gentleness from the hands of men, yet with Nick, there had never been fear, doubt or question that he would hurt her. Only his edges were rough, not the man himself. And if she had shown any sign of uncertainty, the ginger-haired girl was confident he'd have ended his touch immediately, likely followed by an apology.
The best way she knew of to offer reassurance that his touch was welcome and that she received it willingly was the soft smile that reflected in her bright blue eyes. Those, Nick knew how to read plainly to see the truth. She in turn could see the panic flee his gaze, allowing her to relax once more. However, Gabrielle was curious at his response. Nick sounded genuinely surprised that she'd spoken so firmly in his defense, though his compliment evoked a crimson blush upon being hailed as amazing. Ducking her head down, she felt awkward and a little silly. She'd never been very good at accepting compliments.
"I am not amazing, only someone who does not like to see abuse. I have had too much of it to allow anyone to do so, especially to someone who does not deserve it." Making her eyes rise to his, she smiled faintly and added, "Nobility is not just a matter of birth, Nicholas. I've seen those who claim noble status behave worse than a guttersnipe, and I've seen poor, uneducated men show more manners than a Prince. Given my choice, I'll take the pauper over the prince."
Gabrielle wondered briefly if she'd spoken too freely then but he deserved to hear the truth as she believed it.
