The first few days in Vanderhall passed in a blur for everyone, especially Mariette. It hardly seemed that she rose in the morning and choked down a cup of tea brought to her by Gabrielle before the influx of tasks and matters requiring her attention poured in. They kept her busy from morning through noon and into the night, until she was so tired she could barely stay awake past dinner. Fortunately, she was growing more accustomed to the pace, allowing her more energy to tend to things.
Wanting to see the city for herself, she decided to send for Nick as her escort. Gabrielle had already helped her into a riding dress that morning before coming down to see about breakfast. Humming to herself, Mariette handed off the morning's letter to her sisters for one of the couriers, knowing that there would likely start being responses later in the day. A nod thanked the waiting courier before she moved on to the main hall, greeting those whom she passed.
Not seeing Nick among those busy within the hall, she headed out towards the courtyard, the better to greet her mare and hopefully find her knight. It was an effort towards efficiency, or so Mariette told herself. Shivering a little as the cool air hit her, reminding her that summer was definitely over, she looked up at the sky, seeing the pearl grey color of the clouds. The remaining servants had murmured that snow flurries were likely to begin soon.
She was not ready for that, and more to the point, neither was the castle. Making a mental note to talk with the city residents about laying in a greater supply of firewood and hastening with the necessary repairs, she smiled politely at the groom, asking for her mare to be saddled, and Nick's horse as well.
Now where was that knight? There was another rather interesting matter to be discussed once they were on their way.
