The plate of antipasto was savored every bit, the same as the wine and the company. Elena was relaxed, relatively at ease in Elisa's company and comfortable as much in silence as she was in speech with the lady. As the eldest of Niccolo's unwed sisters, Elisabeta held a unique position in the household, a realization that Elena then factored as a source of Caterina's protective nature and manifested behavior. She had not been quite so observant as she normally prided herself to be, a flaw that she needed to correct forthwith for the good of their mutual futures.
Glancing up as a fresh glass was poured, this time of a fruity, fragrant and chilled white, she nodded her thanks to the servant but did not immediately reach to sample it, preferring instead to consume several cubes of cheese and thin slices of bread to help absorb the alcohol. Elena had no wish to lose her head or her wits to the wine, especially now that the moves required more thought and care in this game. The focus of topics remained in Elisa's hands, evidenced by the neutral response to her comment. Lowering her eyes for a moment, she felt a smile threaten to tug at her lips.
"A truthful one," she replied gently. "Those like you, Elisabeta, are hardly common. To reach the skill you possess requires a level of commitment few are willing to make, I think we can agree. Observation, assessment, and the ability to read others require a great deal of concentration, focus and practice. It is truly work, and most are simply unwilling to devote themselves entirely to that craft. But each family of Archades has them, that much is a given. Discovering who they are is an advantage I do not think either of us would fail to take."
