As vassals to the Deveraux family, the demand on the Beaumont family socially was quite high, both as guests and hosts. Liselle was seldom exempted from attending those events, especially when they stood as hosts. She spoke little, but did her part in ensuring that all went smoothly so that the family appeared at its best. Fortunately, some of the gowns her mother and sister acquired for her allowed her to pass relatively unnoticed since they hardly suited her and made Celeste appear all the more attractive. As for Amaury, he appeared to enjoy the bevy of females flung at his head in an effort to entice him into marriage.
"Good," was all she said in response to her previous efforts to compel his cooperation. It hadn't been easy before, occasionally requiring a brief, whispered argument before he eventually capitulated to her demand. Had he realized during his absence that it wasn't about her, but it was about him? She was proud of him, wanting Perceval to be seen in the best possible light. When he was askew, that didn't happen. People were far too distracted by what appeared off about him.
The sensation of his eyes on her, studying the differences that five years' passage made in her face, eyes and hair left Liselle feeling a little shy. She seldom cared what another thought of her looks or appearance, but Perceval's good opinion meant the world to her. Hoping she wasn't blushing like some silly little court twit, she smiled dryly at his comment. "If they disagree, they do not know you. That is their loss."
The mention of Florian chased the smile from her face completely, her eyes glancing away in barely concealed annoyance. Her brother was not one prone to change, not when he was utterly convinced he was right and knew best. A irritated shrug answered Perceval. "Some things never change. He is only letting me go to the masque because Amaury goes." As if she would find a scandal to embrace in the process of attending the masquerade ball!
