Sophie did not know what possessed her to decide on attending the masquerade. Perhaps it was the chance for one night to attend an event at the palace where she did not have to worry so much about toeing the line of propriety. Maybe it was the desire to be viewed as the noblewoman she was born to be for one night. There were a thousand possibilities that held some truth to them. Regardless, with Giulia beside her, the two sisters drifted to join those who entered the palace ballroom for the evening's festivities.
She'd chosen the deep forest green gown and the gold-rimmed mask deliberately, the better to represent the forest on the edge of their family's estate. Sophie could often be found within the trees when they were back in Pistoia, moving as if one with the wind when she was not finding inspiration for her jewelry design. It also gave her a place to escape Elettra when her cousin was feeling particularly shrewish. Thus, it only seemed natural that she should dress as the personification of the Forest itself for a masquerade.
To her credit, she was not barefoot, but the slippers on her feet were very thin, barely a layer of leather and silk that allowed her to move more freely than shoes typically permitted. Her hair was left down, the golden curls twined with ivy to add emphasis to the idea that she was a creature of the Forest. All in all, Sophie was pleased with the costume, comfortable in it and content that she looked rather appropriate. Giulia approved, and that made the night complete for her, though she couldn't help but look for a certain tall man with gilded hair.
Would he be here? She would know him in an instant, she was sure. No mask could conceal him from her.
