“Will we be safe anywhere in this land tonight…?” Giulia asked quietly, her voice tinged with fear. They had all seen the transition as they rode. Shelbourne was touted as the verdant jewel of the kingdom and this place was its antithesis. It felt wrong at its deepest level. They would not find rest until whatever cancer had caused this was successfully purged. Nonetheless, she ruminated on Sophie’s words and nodded slowly.
Gideon considered the young man’s words quietly while gazing at the parchment in his hand. Indeed, the census of the village was here and after it, the list of those slain. What survivors there had been had no doubt since left this place for fairer lands, if such a place existed for them. But the girl’s name? What could the girl’s name had been? The knight sighed in thought after Romeo’s words and began what felt like a long trek through the list.
The list was horridly long, and yet, Gideon felt it should have been longer. Memories of the massacre drifted forth like a creeping miasma, making him restless and wary. At first, he was lost, but gradually he regained his focus. Girl’s names. He had to focus on girl’s names, even if there were so many. The knight stood still for what felt like an eternity.
“Moira?” The name seemed to puzzle him, his brow flickering and then he looked as if he had been struck. Something seemed to ring in his mind. “But she never-“ The knight winced suddenly. “Mm,” he grunted quietly. “Never said her name.” And yet, it felt right to him. “Moira.” And then he thought he heard something again, causing him to turn toward the main room of the chapel.
