As things finally quieted down, and Rossalyn spoke to the man, Tyber raised a placating hand. "I could hardly care less about the live dagger he carried. After all, I had my own." The rule about no live blades on the practice field had never been brought up with him, or his men. Was it their status as guests, or his own standing as a knight, or his being a son of one of Shelbourne's great houses that had so protected him? And it was common, back home and even in Bordelaix, for men to train and spar with live blades. But it tended to be between men who knew each other, or at least had every reason to trust in the other's control.
"But I have a serious problem with him trying to come at me from behind. I would be grateful of such was the only issue you'd mention to your lord father. Along with his beating of a lad he was supposed to instruct, of course. Though, you may also wish to speak of the disgraceful lack of training he has himself." There was something like a playful glint back in the burly knight's eyes. Oh, he had immensely enjoyed himself cutting that bastard down to size, but that attack from behind had just about succeeded in taking all the joy out of the thing.
And, of course, he enjoyed teaching squires. There were knights who jealously kept their knowledge to themselves and only taught their pages and squires the bare minimum. But not Tyber Sinclair. He taught everything he knew.
Though, as Adara offered the lad her hand to take him to care, he froze in place, his eyes going wide. He, Duncan, a nobody squire to a disgraced man at arms, was being offered care by the lady Rossalyn herself? And that brought a laugh from Tyber, for he saw, well, much of himself. "Rossalyn, if I may?" He let a pause go by. "Roland, take him and see to him. And take the rest of the day, if you'd like. Maybe show him a thing or two yourself, from the fundamentals. At least prepare him for his new master. Or for me."
"Th... thank you Lord!" The young lad stammered a response, and Roland whispered something in his ear. "I mean, thank you, Sir Tyber."
"Just go, lad. Roland will see you done right."
As both lads left, he turned back to the lady. "Roland needs to learn these things too. He's still pretty green, but in a few years he'll be ready for his vigil, and it's my job to see to it he's ready to stand as man-at-arms or a knight himself, in all possible ways."
