Character Name:
Kathryn Remington
Age:
24
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
May 15, 1403
City / Region:
Montenoire
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]:
Remington
Played by:
Meryem Uzeli
Appearance:
A petite contrast to her tall brother, Kathryn has a rich fall of red hair framing an oval face of porcelain skin and witchy green-blue eyes. A woman of discerning tastes, she is always impeccably attired in bright hues that set off her fine complexion and unquestionably feminine figure. Silks, satins, laces, fine wools and linens are her preferred fabrics, often draped in exquisite, specifically designed jewelry. As her father's favored daughter, she has been given the cream of the Grand Duke's gifts and wealth.
Personality:
Kathryn is an interesting dichotomy of practicality and vivacity. She truly enjoys life in all of its aspects, embraces the luxury, opportunity and influence that her position in life grants her to the fullest, yet is aware how easily such advantages can be lost. She understands that with privilege comes responsibility, striving to balance the two. If she wants to attend a party or obtain a new gown, then she must earn it through charitable works or aiding her family's cause. Nothing in life is truly free, she was taught.
She is intelligent, articulate and forward-thinking, seeing no reason to conceal it. Montenoire's society does not require demure or retiring ladies, allowing the women to hone and display their talents alongside the men. This environment is a blessing to Kathryn, who strives to learn all she can, not only about her own society and home, but the world around her.
Confidence is tempered by some humility, knowing that she has limits. She is merely human and flawed, however capable she may appear to be. She has no power to stave off death if it is meant to be, but she works diligently to encourage and prolong life. As a trained, skilled healer, Kathryn has a very realistic view of the world. Not every illness can be cured, not every injury will heal. The gods will have what they will. That does not mean she will not fight to save every patient she treats, regardless of their rank. Life is precious, after all.
However, Kathryn is not one to seek attention. She feels she is best when working through others, especially her brother Nicholas. Suggestions come more easily to her than orders. While she won't necessarily avoid eyes on her, she is not one to keep them on her. That does not make her a shy woman, however. She can be downright bold when the situation calls for it. And needless to say, her will is very strong. She will stand firm when she feels she is right.

Background:
Born a mere year or so before her brother, Kathryn came into the world with her eyes wide open. The midwife took one look at the child to emerge from the womb and slowly shook her head as the parents looked on, gripping each other in distress. The tiny babe seemed so frail, so delicate, gasping for breath in the midwife's hands. Surely this little mite could not live for long, let alone thrive, but her mother and father refused to relinquish hope. They patiently cared for their daughter, tending to her with loving hands and fervent hope.
As she grew, Kathryn remained small but contrary to the midwife's prediction, began to thrive. She learned to walk, though talking came more slowly. Her brother spoke on her behalf, and in return, Kathryn helped him with his lessons. He was bright, healthy, strong, vibrant... but those pesky sums knew how to do him in. The two helped each other to survive childhood, she often said. Where Charlotte was their mother's favorite, the tiny girl was the apple of her father's eye, often to be found snuggled trustingly in the crook of his arm, riding on the saddle before him or seated on his lap while she dozed.
When she was not at her lessons, she was learning her mother's craft often or in the gardens, but Kathryn found it fun to sneak into the kitchens. There, under the indulgent eye of the cooks, she could be found dusty with flour as she played in the doughs, or laughing breathlessly in trying to turn the spit with the scullion, or perched on a high stool out of the knives' way as they chopped, carved and diced in preparation for meals. Given herbs to learn, she enjoyed adding the seasonings that made the Remington table a highly touted experience, enhanced all the more by their wines, for which the family was renowned.
A healthy girl, Kathryn silently thanked the Gods for the health he bestowed on her, especially after the passing of her mother. Care had to be taken of her father, left devastated in the wake of her mother's death, and of her brother, pushed forward as the heir to Montenoire despite Arthur's desire that Kathryn become Grand Duchess after he passed into the beyond. Preferring instead to advise her brother and continue the work of her mother, she has not eschewed marriage, yet her father and brother have persistently refused all suitors for her hand. She is growing a little frustrated with that, wanting a family of her own eventually.
Reluctant but intrigued, she has nonetheless agreed to travel with Nicholas to open negotiations with Archades for trade and other matters of state. What lies ahead is unknown to her, but Kathryn has promised to stand by her brother for the sake of his future, hers and for Montenoire.

There were times when Joanna felt the fires of Montefiore burned too hot, threatening to engulf their family. The gentle Dove of the family was not one to enjoy conflict, yet she felt surrounded by it, thanks in no small part to the arrival of her brother's betrothed, a lady of House Sandoval. More and more, she sought an escape from the conflict buzzing in the main castle in the chapel when she was not tending to the needs of the poor, the aged and the children of the city. She felt safe there, the peace of the Triune infusing her and lending her the serenity she craved.
Joanna moved quietly, her steps muffled by the soft soles of the slippers she wore within the castle's walls. Hoping to find her cousin Piero, she trusted he would be in the chapel, preparing for Compline, or in the small office that served the chaplain's administrative needs. Not seeing him in the chapel, she wove her path to the door that stood open as if in invitation, pausing to study her devout cousin. A gentle curve of her lips noted the peaceful look on his face as slumber hovered over him. The summer's warmth had its effect on Piero today.
Debating whether to let him sleep or disturb him, she crept closer. Unwilling to spoil the moment, Joanna reached to gently remove the quill from his hand, intending to lay it down before he covered himself in ink...
