How was Caterina supposed to take this? Realistically, she did not have an option - of course, Elena had been kind enough to offer the opportunity for escape, and Nic had backed her up...but she knew her brother, and the look on his face told her that if it came to that, he would be most displeased. He had thought about what to do, assessed the situation and selected Caterina not as a punishment but as someone who he trusted to accomplish the endgame.
But what was the endgame? Caterina was terrified that it would be nothing more than Cat curling up to die in a house that was suffocating in its enormity, acquiescing to the wishes of her faceless groom.
Cesare wasn't faceless, though, Cat had to remind herself. How had that happened? And how much of their little adventure had been a lie? How much had he spoken truth? They needed to meet, to discuss so she could see if she saw the same man in him she'd seen then. Even if he was that man, the one who sought adventure just as much as she, how quickly would that change?
There were too many questions, and Caterina was beginning to feel penned in. She needed a distraction so her head would stop spinning, so she could breathe past the weight that had settled on her chest. Sending a quick note to Allegra, Caterina moved down the stairs into the courtyard, trying to settle her mind again as she waited for her sister. Allegra could typically distract her, and she always felt like Allegra was one of her sisters who was not trying to convince her of something.
Gathering the skirts of her gown over one arm, she moved amongst the scant flowers that tried desperately to lighten the mostly sunless courtyard.
Sister,
I would very much like your company for a walk about the marketplace, if you would be so kind as to join me? I'm in the courtyard, when you've time,
