Character Name: Antoinette Deveraux
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Birthdate: July 1st, 1404
City / Region: Bordelaix, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Deveraux
Played by: Emily Kinney
Appearance: Tall, thin, having come late to her more womanly curves. Long, almost blindingly blonde hair, with bright blue eyes, akin to the coloring of her sisters. Antoinette's voice, in its natural state, is light and high-pitched, but can drop down to the most secretive of whispers. Her smile is small, almost pinched, on thin lips; it is in Antoinette's eyebrows that all expression makes its claim, her emotions displayed most around her large, luminous eyes. She tends to dress in bold colors to off-set her terribly pale skin and features, careful to avoid earth-tones, lest she become lost in them.
Personality: Charming, outgoing, charismatic. A terror -- for a brief time, as a child. Dangerous -- in a different sense, now, as an adult.
What she holds most dearly: herself. And her sisters. It is only with Nicolette that Antoinette feels any true sense of comfort, however, as she considers her to be the most honest and trustworthy person in a life that is otherwise plagued with false appearances. Possessing a strong sense of honor, Antoinette is not fond of liars or cheats, and can recognize the hollowness of many of her own pursuits; in this, Antoinette has always remained conflicted, desiring to maintain her position in society while fearful of the repercussions of entertaining such a vapid existence. Exceedingly competitive, Antoinette has great difficulty when it comes to losing gracefully, and tends to have a sharp tongue when she should just keep her mouth shut. Verbally sparring with Antoinette is taking ones life in ones hands; she does not flinch at hitting the deepest insecurities. Nonetheless, rare moments of compassion and empathy reveal themselves in Antoinette's otherwise controlled personality -- which are few and far between, and saved mostly for her sisters -- but it can be seen that beneath her rather calculated exterior, she is a woman capable of great warmth. Whether or not she chooses to use it, is... an entirely different story.
Specific Skills or Abilities: Persuasion, deceit, and shuffling a deck of cards with one hand. Capable with small knives and evasion, courtesy of her uncle Jean-Luc; not particularly strong, but rather quick.
Background: An heir and a spare; that is how the saying goes, isn't it?
Unfortunately for King Alexandre, his first child was a daughter; and, perhaps worse still, his second turned out to be the same. And for a time this meant nothing, as there was still hope for a boy to be born; but once Alexandre's fourth child proved to be of similar sex, the put-upon King shifted his view -- and began to groom his eldest, Nicolette, as his inevitable successor.
When Nicolette was drawn away from the rest of her younger sisters around age 11, to receive a more focused tutelage under their father, it was Antoinette who took this separation hardest. She had, in her youth, displayed from infancy a vibrancy that commanded a room -- she spoke smartly, sang loudly, and demanded attention whereever she moved. She was Nicolette's shadow, as sisters often are. But the eldest sister's separation -- and in Antoinette's eyes, elevation -- tore at the second daughter. And for a time, it seemed to punctuate the second child's moods and general behavior -- it was around this age that her overt restlessness began to take hold; a mere foreshadowing of what would be several years of flaunting rules, bucking authority and veritable teenage rage. As Nicolette was groomed, and the sisters grew up but not necessarily together, Antoinette became more and more reckless; still the same bright, chattering persona from childhood but now filled with tempestuous reactions and appalling language. She used her natural gifts for nothing but disruption and rudeness; cavorting about, heedless of her position. There was no real reason to be found behind her lawlessness; the more her attendants and aunts and uncles tried to reign her in, the more Antoinette fought back. She grew closer with her cousins than her sisters, for a time, and it was then she struck up a tight relationship with her cousin Emile; who, throughout these years, was a laughing shadow in all of Antoinette's exploits.
Then, around her eighteenth year, Antoinette suddenly -- stopped. The chaos that seemed to surround her so easily -- slipping free from her societal restraints, the propensity for scandalous behavior, the carousing with Emile while shirking her responsibilities -- all suddenly disappeared. The same confident, shrewd, tactful Antoinette remained; but it was as if a shift in the planets had set her natural slate of talents to a more productive medium. The distance she had kept between herself and her eldest sister Nicolette, evaporated; suddenly, the pair were inseparable, Antoinette now a regular presence in Nicolette's retinue, their steps sharing a paired sound. Inexplicably, she found her place; to watch over Mariette, to coax her from her shell; to press Juliette into accepting the mantle of a proper lady; and, as always, to support Nicolette, and be her right hand -- whatever that meant. She was still the life of the court, the veritable Lady of the Hour in most gatherings; but her aims had shifted from merely attaining selfish satisfactions, to something greater. What that was, one could not rightly say. Antoinette played most cards close to her chest.
Her relationship with each sister is entirely varied, of course.
When it comes to Mariette, Antoinette of late has tried to be a more influential hand with her immediate younger sister. Although far more receptive to Antoinette's interference than their youngest sister, Juliette, Mariette still remains a nut to crack in Antoinette's eyes. All the makings of a influential, important lady are there; the details just have to be buffed out. It is to Mariette that Antoinette gives most of her attention (and much of her criticism), knowing her position as third sister to be of more immediate importance than anything else.
With Juliette, the youngest, Antoinette finds herself more often than not irritated and exasperated -- as Juliette refuses, in Antoinette's mind, to accept the position she holds and the appearances she must keep. Where one might best keep their distance in this division, Antoinette goes out of her way to try and change Juliette, perhaps with a more forceful hand than she should; being openly and oftimes cruel to her youngest sister.
It is with Nicolette that Antoinette harbors the best relationship. To claim the sisters are close is an understatement; the years of their distance have all been but forgotten, as Antoinette now commits herself to Nicolette's cause, as a trusted adviser, the truest of confidants. And for a woman so artful with her tongue, Antoinette has been counted as Nicolette's staunchest attack-dog; the bright blue of her eyes have more than once fixed on Nicolette's dissenters with a cool and calculated gleam.
Writing Sample:
It was a usual sighting for the afternoon; Emile, his hands clasped behind his back, head bowed low towards Antoinette, walking slowly; a rueful, covert smile on his face. Antoinette, seemingly gliding beside him, one hand gesturing lightly in the air before them, her bright blue eyes fixated before her, widened, as though seeing something else aside from the garden path the pair trod. Antoinette's voice was hushed; and could not be heard over the breeze, but this did not keep Emile's wolfish grin subdued; and with a sharp twist of her wrist, Antoinette came to the apex of her story -- glancing up at her cousin, a churlish expression on her face.
The pair of cousins paused then, falling briefly to mocking laughter; the subject of their conversation none the wiser.
