Character Name: Bastien Corteo
Age: 32
Gender: Male
Birthdate: November 1st, 1395 - Scorpio
City / Region: Bordelaix, Fauxcheux
House: N/A
Played by: Jeremy Renner
Appearance:
Bastien stands at around 5’11” with a lean, but extremely toned build. He might not be the broadest tank in the batch, but he can take a sound beating and keep on going. He’s kind of like the John McClane of Archades where he somewhat defies the laws of reality in how frequently you can abuse him without him going down. Perhaps it is because he’s conditioned to it. Strip away the armor and fabric and you’ll see an artistic medley of scars that all have their stories permanently etched on his body. From the bladed stabs, the lash of the whip, to arrow piercings, it seems that Bastien’s background syncs up pretty soundly against the skills he wields in combat.
As far as appearances go he maintains a military ruggedness about him. Clean cut with just a bit of scruff and the armor is kept polished though it shows its wear and tear. His dark hair and blue eyes seem indicative that his parentage was likely somewhere in the northern countries, but his style and skills are uncharacteristically eastern.
Personality:
It seems a bit hard to pinpoint his real persona under the straight-laced face and gruff attitude. Bastien takes his responsibilities very seriously, and when he’s off duty he keeps to himself. Never has he warmed up to any of his brothers-in-arms on any level. However if you ask them if they would trust him with their lives they would ultimately say ‘yes’ with the addendum of the fact that he’s a bit cold. It’s really hard to tell whether he does his job out of the sheer desire to throw himself into some kind of fray, or if it’s from some deeply hidden level of compassion. People can’t really tell, and unfortunately Bastien doesn’t give them much to work with in regards to expressions of sympathy.
Ultimately people just assume that he suffers from some form of silent PTSD that he keeps under insane control. His skills aren’t completely traditional to that of the standard royal military style, but they are extremely useful. Given that his entire backstory is mostly a mystery, and something he doesn’t really care to much share other than a few basics, the other soldiers believe that Bastien’s brush with the eastern tribesmen might be the reason for his aloof nature.
Bastien’s been known to smile and crack jokes from time to time, he’s not completely inhuman. It is simply the fact that he devotes himself earnestly to his work and forces all distractions out of his psyche when on duty. Off the clock, however, he eases up and one might find that he has quite the sarcastic sense of humor. But those moments are infrequent to others because of his habitual regime of vanishing the moment he’s not assigned to be at the heels of a royal entity. However, even when off the clock he never ceases to keep his eyes and ears on the royal family. In a way, he’s the loyal watchdog and even though you might think he’s not around, you could be quite mistaken.
Background:
Most of Bastien’s background prior to joining the royal army of Faucheux remains quite a mystery even to this day. Given that he doesn’t like to talk about himself all that much, it opens up the doorway for others’ assumptions. This can be good or bad depending upon the individual. The things that are known remain fairly factual in their documentation. Bastien showed up in Bordelaix at the age of twenty-one with several letters of recommendation from a couple of commanding officers and his patents of heraldry in regards to the formal status of his knighthood. He had been stationed in Rohari to help cull the flare-ups caused by the wild tribes that run that particular region.
Training for that purpose was considered unorthodox, and when asked to demonstrate his skills Bastien was quick to wipe the floor with just about any knight that found it a treat to pick on the newbie. While he held his own very well with sword and shield and spear, it was actually his ability to disarm his opponent quickly and bring them to their knees in hand-to-hand close combat range that made him quite an intimidating force to be reckoned with. Dagger, feet, and fist seemed to be a more favorable approach to this particular knight who didn’t fear much of anything along the way. The Captain of the Guard at the time saw this as a new potential, but wanted to take time in observing Bastien’s behavior given the fact that his history in the eastern regions raised a few red flags.
Not the type to complain, he worked his way diligently through the ranks from the ground up. Through feats of strength and valor, Bastien proved himself time and time again with his efficiency and dedication towards any mission he was given. As a knight with very little family contact, and no real penchant for conversation, many dubbed him Mr. Stand Alone. This is mostly because he keeps a proverbial wall between him and his comrades in regards to befriending them.
Despite the cool exterior and disinterested attitude, Bastien has always been a solid foundation to the military ranks. When a knight was in trouble, he would aid them. When an important delegate needed protection, he would escort them. No task has been too big or too small to where Bastien felt above or beneath the objective. As the years passed and as men have come and gone, he has remained a steady presence in the royal military both as a leader and a follower in everything he does. Having cut his teeth regularly on the tests of loyalty, Bastien was promoted to one of the most distinguished positions of all: Guard to the Royal Family.
Handed only to a small collective of the elite, for the past year and some months he has been committed to the service and protection of the Deveraux King, Queen, and daughters. Each one has had their challenges and quirks but ultimately Bastien’s steadfastness has kept the family well protected. Even with Mariette and her bouts of extreme clumsiness; it seems to have not deterred the knight, only stir an occasional smirk of amusement from time to time. However, though he spends a great deal of his time protecting the King during matters of state, it appears Bastien has piqued the intrigue of another daughter entirely.
Though he is not a man of politics Bastien has kept a close eye and ear on how conversations and exchanges have been proceeding with the King and members of the Archades Court. With storms brewing from the eastern regions, it appears that tides might be trying to shift and he will need to be ready for anything.
Writing Sample:
“Ungf!”
The man grunted in pain as his face hit the stone flooring and he found himself unable to move. Bastien’s hand was firmly gripped against the back of his neck with his arm twisted behind him. What had transpired prior to get the assassin to this point seemed benign at best. A weathered old farmer was the disguised appearance as he approached Alexandre with accolades and praises.
Though Bastien wasn’t the type to judge the King one way or another, he knew that the Deveraux’s popularity had its rough patches. As the King listened to one gripe after another, having the old man come sauntering in with very little trouble seemed suspicious enough. When the knights ahead of Bastien asked the man to remain where he stood this immediately triggered a red flag.
It appeared that the old man was discovered, and he quickly tried to get in closer but Bastien had already made moves against him. With swift, brutal strikes the assailant was on the ground and the knight pulled the small dagger that was sheathed under a tattered sleeve. With careful discretion he further inspected the blade and noticed something off about the coloring near the lower half of the blade. Eventually he handed it to the nearby knight that came to support him, “Be careful, it’s coated.”
As the situation dispersed, Bastien yanked the man up to his feet and nodded to the King, “My apologies Your Majesty. I will handle this.”
Very little needed to be said on what the ultimate verdict would be for this attacker: Death.
For now, Bastien dragged his writhing, bellowing body out of the court hall. Half way through the walk everyone suddenly heard the brunt sound of the guy being abruptly silenced along the way.
