Character Name:
Eirian Cadag
Age:
24
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
June 21, 1409
City / Region:
Vulcanis
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
Cadag
Played by:
Holliday Grainger
Appearance:
A petite, slim and pale woman, Eirian is ever mindful of her appearance. She does her best to dress stylishly, choosing lighter, soft hues that accentuate her porcelain skin and fair hair. Though she longs for the lush, rich fabrics, she is nonetheless sensible, choosing linens, cottons and wools that allow her to look like a lady of rank but still permit her to tend her duties. When inside, she wears soft slippers or sandals, but outside, thanks to the rougher terrain, she dons ankle-boots to protect herself. She wears modestly cut gowns, often with long sleeves, the hems reaching either to the tops of her feet or the floor.
Personality:
Studious - Eirian views the world surrounding her as one ongoing lesson on a variety of subject that range from natural philosophy, politics, economics, sociology, history, chemistry (both literal and metaphorical), biology and so on. She is not so pure a scholar that she stands aloof from life merely to watch, but puts herself in the thick of it.
Serene - She is a genuinely content person. Aware that life has its darknesses and disappointments, Eirian prefers not to linger on them, searching for the silver lining in every cloud. Often seen wearing a smile, she takes pleasure in small things as well as great. A pretty flower, the sight of a child at play, or a dog's wagging tail can bring her joy. Life is meant to be enjoyed, truly.
Loyal - Family comes first, last, always to Eirian. Now that Merthen is head of the family, she is respectful of his leadership and obedient to his commands in support of the family agenda. Fond of her sister in law Regan and the nieces and nephews that have come from that marriage, she looks forward to what the Cadags will achieve in the months and years to come.
Manipulative - Being human means she has flaws and vices. In Eirian's case, she has been known to use her innocent face and fair looks to wind people around her finger and use them to her own ends, though she takes care not to press too far. She is not cruel, but if people are gullible, then they deserve to be led. After all, she is a Cadag, and they are known to be natural leaders.
Supercilious - Some say that Eirian has far too much pride for her own good. A firm believer that the Clans of Vulcanis deserve the pride of place as the true, original peoples of Archades, she also supports the idea that Vulcanis deserves a greater measure of respect and influence throughout the kingdom, urging her brother to make his voice heard and his power felt in greater measure.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Fluent in numerous Archadean languages and dialects (written and spoken)
Skilled calligrapher/scribe
Political Acumen
Courtly Manners
Background:
Born the youngest of Murygh's numerous children, Eirian was born as a contrast to the High Laird's eldest and heir on the summer solstice. Where Merthen bore an unmistakable resemblance to their father, she was crowned in pale hair and skin, resulting in the pointed choice of her name. And for much of her life, she has resembled the meaning of her name - bright.
An unremarkable baby and toddler, Eirian did what most youngest children do - she tagged along after her siblings as soon as she was able to walk. The talking, however, came much later. For a time, her father feared that his youngest was mute, coming late in her mother's life and a good five years after his youngest son, Artur. His fears seemed valid until she finally spoke at five years of age in complete sentences. Her mother regarded her youngest warily, realizing that the child had known how to speak all along, but chose not to for reasons she could not begin to fathom. Instead, she'd used other means of communication to gain her way and make her wishes known.
Her daughter bore careful watching, as far as Lady Cadag was concerned. There was a brightness to Eirian, but there was also shade in her personality that would need to be tempered. Accordingly, Eirian was given the education appropriate to the High Laird's daughter, though her tutors swiftly surmised the girl's gift for languages and for the written word. Approaching the High Laird, permission was granted to instill the knowledge of other dialects and languages, along with calligraphy, grammar and the art of the scribe.
Closest to Merthen, she was still very much a child when he wedded the Lady Regan, the daughter of another clan's chief. The woman was gentle and taught Eirian much about maintaining serenity in the face of chaos, that a woman may have more influence under quiet paths than in demands and loudness. She welcomed the arrival of Merthen's and Regan's children, pleased to see that the family will endure another generation.
Eirian was sixteen at her father's passing, newly betrothed when both her father and her betrothed passed under circumstances that raised more than a few brows. Despite her eldest brother's protests, no true investigation ensued, leaving the matter far from resolved in the family's mind. To this day, Eirian has resolutely refused to marry until justice is done; how can she marry while her father's soul and her betrothed's soul are unable to be at peace?
Reluctant to be a burden on her brother and sister in law, she has devoted herself instead to being useful on a number of levels as an aide to Lady Cadag in maintaining the household, and as a scribe and translator for her brother, though she is often concealed during meetings so as not to offend the more traditional clansmen. For now, she is content, but can feel something hovering on the horizon...
Writing Sample:
With her sister beside her, the two made their way to the location cited in the invitation, her gaze training on those feminine figures already present. Lady Allegra Montefiore, of course, flanked by their brother Sebastian, the lone gentleman amongst ladies. Angelia then recognized the Ladies Elisabeta, Caterina and Joanna, sisters to their putative hostess, and her own cousin Catalina. Surprised in that moment for her failure to spot Elena, Angelia murmured quietly for Cela's ears alone, "Elena is not here. We might want to be careful, sister... it is unlikely that her absence is an omission. More likely, Elena is sending a message to little Lady Allegra."
Maricela was a shrewdly intelligent woman, one who needed no further warning. Angelia trusted her sister in that regard, forming a pleasant smile onto her features as she advanced to greet those already gathered. "Good day, Lady Allegra. Sebastian," a dip of her head acknowledged her brother with a twinkle in her eyes; there would be teasing to come later. Turning the blue eyes to the Montefiore ladies and her cousin the Duchess, she smiled with greater warmth. "Ladies, as always, a pleasure to gather in such lovely company."
