The news came to him late the night before that his brother Rizio's ship was sighted sailing into the small port that was Anzio. Knowing his brother's tendencies while on ship, Antonin elected to wait until dawn to descend and greet the Captain of the Argent Porpoise, knowing his Duchess would only benefit from a quiet morning to herself. The reason nearly brought a smile to the solemn duke's lips, though he restrained himself. Those who spotted their Lord smiling were likely to misinterpret the reason; he had no desire to alarm the people unduly.
Rising with the sun, he moved quietly about the inn room he shared with his still slumbering wife, dressing and carrying his boots into the hall rather than risk waking Catalina. One of the men on guard nodded a greeting as he remained at attention in his post at one end of the hall, staying where he was until his relief arrived. Antonin knew some of the other men were already awake, two coming to relieve those guarding the hall while one or two others were ready to attend their Duke. He doubted there was much in the way of danger to him here, yet he was too accustomed to having a man at his elbow to forego one now.
Thus, with one of the Ducal Guard shadowing him, Antonin enjoyed a brisk stroll through the slowly awakening village, heading for the harbor. Rizio would be there, of that he had no doubt. Given a choice between a bed in the inn and his cabin on the Porpoise, it was no contest. Besides, his brother would have something decent to drink available despite the early hour. Approaching the ship, the Duke hailed the morning watchman to gain the man's attention.
"Would you be so good as to inform your Captain that his brother is here and seeks permission to board, please?"
