Character Name: Aydan Deschenes
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Birthdate: July 18, 1391
City / Region: Forestier, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Deschenes
Played by: Gerard Butler
Appearance:
Aydan typically wears clothing that is durable and able to take the wear and tear of someone out among the woods on a regular basis. For required family, business and formal occasions, he wears simple, tailored outfits appropriate for the situation.
Skills and Abilities: Skilled with a variety of weapons (bows, swords, maces, pole arms, etc.); trained in tactics and strategy; knowledgeable in military and business logistics, administration and accounting
Personality: Used to being overlooked by the family, he tends to stay on the edge of gatherings. While not shy, he finds 'the court' to be boring and avoids it as much as possible. When required to attend events, he tends to not speak unless spoken to, keeping his counsel for when it is asked for. In his business dealings, he is much more open and boisterous. He enjoys a good meal, good drink and good company (which he does find his older siblings to be, when they aren't discussing politics). He feels he got all the 'partying' out of his system after he left the army, but does enjoy the occasional row. The once quick temper of his childhood is gone, replaced now with one that simmers. He is quick to laugh, but has an odd sense of humor.
Background: Aydan Christopher Deschenes was born on July 18, 1391, the youngest child of Benedict Deschenes and Wanda Delemara. An energetic child, he loved to explore and was often getting into minor accidents. When Aydan was six years of age, his first nephew and heir to the Deschenes line was born. While never quite ‘forgotten’, this gave him more opportunities to avoid the ‘boring’ world of court.
More often than not, as the years passed, Aydan could be found among the soldiers and guards. He learned of weaponry and armor from these men. His father gave silent approval, only stepping in when Aydan was required elsewhere or was not attending his other studies or duties. It became the best way to keep him in line, as an offhand remark of forbidding the activity would easily settle the young boy down.
Once Aydan gained his majority, he went off to the military. His lineage provided him a commission, and his skill gained him recognition. Surprisingly, Aydan found that the non-marital aspects of his education and training as a nobleman’s son were of use. His familiarity with the lower classes soldiers of his youth gave him a bit of foresight that he used to gain the loyalty and trust of his men.
Near the end of his training, Ayden was sent on a routine patrol mission to Roubaix where they were attacked, sparking a short lived rebellion. The events cemented his commission, and was given an award for valor. Four more years passed uneventfully. During horsemanship training, Aydan's mount spooked, throwing him. A broken leg put him in the hospital for nearly a year while he healed. Due to the injury, he now had a limp, and it was determined he could no longer serve as need. He was discharged with honors.
Returning home, he settled back into life amongst his family. With his older brothers and sister all married and with children, Aydan found himself a drift. He caroused the taverns and inns nearby for a time, but found himself bored, which is how he found himself one day, buying into the ownership of one of the local logging companies. Forestier is well known for its wood products, and with his usual energy, Aydan learned the business well.
After a small time, he bought out his partners. Now, Aydan Deschenes owns a company that provides hard woods: Cherry, Hickory, Oak and Maple just a few of the trees that he cultivates on his lands. As side ventures, he also sells the fruits, syrups and nuts locally, keeping the best of the harvests for his family and the rare gift.
Writing Sample:
Lieutenant Aydan Deschenes, youngest son of Count Benedict Deschenes, had led his men out on a routine patrol earlier that morning. His scouts had returned, saying a force of near thirty was approaching. They outnumbered his unit, almost two to one. He had sent his fastest horse with the news, back to his commander. He split his own forces, sending his sergeant with the largest group to get behind the enemy and insure no other troops were coming behind them, giving them his horse and orders to not engage. “If you are spotted, draw as many as you can away. Keep them chasing you, if you can’t lose them. Hopefully, they’ll split their numbers and will be easier to take down once the Captain arrives with reinforcements.”
Those reinforcements would be an hour or longer to arrive, however. The sergeant nodded, barked his commands and they were away. His remaining forces, all on foot, he led off to scout before the approaching rebel fighters. Make sure of no reinforcements, find out where they are going, and report all to the captain, he thought to himself. He had never really learned the sneakiness required for scouting when he was younger, and while he wouldn’t be called expert at it, he at least didn’t give away his position by making too much noise. He was snapped out of his thoughts by the hand motions of his remaining scout. Looking where the man had indicated, he nodded slowly. The enemy force was in view. Now to just sit and… Wait, if they keep going that way… He frowned, motioning to another man for a map. Looking over the paper, he almost cursed aloud. It would not have been heard by the enemy, they were too far away…probably. “If they keep to that direction, they’ll run head into Kalman’s.”
He looked to his men, thinking and weighing options. Kalman’s was a small village, not much more than a few farmers and craftsmen. Plenty of food there, other supplies and worse, women and children. Nodding, to them and to himself, as he made his decision. “Quickly, lads, if we hurry, we might give them time to arm up with whatever they have and put in some defenses. Rojeagn, keep your horn ready, it’s going to get used.”
