It was one of the few sunny days along the coast of Faucheux. The summers were generally warm and dry in contrast to the rest of the year which was normally soaking and foggy. Norbert was in his chambers in the house next to the Lord's Castle, the center of the what was colloquially called the Delamara Trading Company. It was a large chamber. Tables abounded and all were strewn with papers, letters, voyage reports, ledgers, and tablets with to-do lists chalked on their faces. In addition to the constant stamping, reading, writing, correcting, and general business of reviewing the business of the family which was cared for by three trained aides in the chambers with Norbert, messengers and ship's boys ran in and out of the chambers to add to the growing piles of papers to review.
The family business, a massive network across all of coastal Archades, as well as in Montenoire, and other states, was booming. The costs of the business were high, but the profit were steadily increasing with each passing year. The Delamaras were no Blackthornes, though the epithet had been leveled at them before. Theirs was a smaller wealth, but a growing one. Norbert looked over the letter in front of him. It contained the orders for the captain of the Alacrity to transport several tons of silk and spice to Catanara. There were more orders for the Ingenuity and the Faithful. It was the time of year when spice ad silk moved the most, as well as other more precious goods. Later, in the fall, grains would become the primary cargo. Winter was defined by the transport of ale and wine.
It was late morning. In only an hour, Norbert would had from the chambers of business to the Lord's Castle to have dinner before meeting with His Lordship concerning political matters of the realm. The spymaster he was not, but Norbert's life, despite being almost entirely economic, was also almost entirely political. He made sure the family business ran smoothly, which made sure the family political affairs would run smoothly.
The sun shone through the leaded windows which lined the upper part of the stone walls, pouring light in a dusty streams into the chambers. Three doors led in and out of the chamber. One led into the courtyard, another into the corridor, and the final door into Norbert's private chambers, where the more important business occurred.
Finishing the orders to the captains, one of Norbert's employees walked into the chamber. "Milord," he said, "His Lordship Egon calls upon you. Shall I bring him into the chambers?"
"What does he want?" asked Norbert.
The servant answered: "He says it has to do with business, milord."
"Show him in."
