Character Name: Olivier Deveraux
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Birthdate: May 27, 1408
City/Region: Bordelaix
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Deveraux
Played by: Jamie Campbell Bower
Appearance:
Olivier is a pale, lanky boy who cannot rightly be called handsome. He possess some interesting qualities, like his fine, straight nose and clear, blue eyes, but all in all the angles of his face paired with the natural thinness of his body do not make for an impressive figure. Olivier’s jaw is pronounced, which paired with his high cheekbones creates a rather sallow shaped face. His mouth is very round, with thick lips and buckteeth. His brow is rather prominent, though it hangs heavy enough over his eyes to add definition to his eyelids. His ears are clumsily shaped and set far back in his head. Though he eats like any growing teen, he never seems to gain weight. His arms and legs remain thin enough to wrap one’s hands around easily, even though he has plenty of muscle. His blond hair is quite refined, though its texture does not quite constitute as “silky.” As for expressions, he is given to staring blankly when his attention is not specifically diverted to one emotion or other, which makes him seem stupid sometimes, though this is not necessarily the case.
Personality:
The word “easygoing” would be the first on most lips when describing Olivier. Since he is so far from the prospect of kingship as a member of the royal family could be, he is hardly concerned with politics and prefers more engaging, interesting pursuits. Though he may look like an introverted pushover, Olivier is quite boisterous and athletic. His natural build may be wimpy looking, but he is clever enough to use his stature to his advantage. Though he is not particularly smart, Olivier possesses enough imagination and education to make reading a well-loved pastime. It is one of the few pursuits he has in common with his twin, Olyvia. Olivier enjoys the outdoors a great deal. It can be difficult to get him to sit still, especially for stuffy, important occasions. The boy prefers the simplicity of sword training and horseback riding to the complexity of court, which is not a bad thing considering his low position on the Deveraux family tree. His irrelevance does not bother him much. He does what he can for his family, but he is a light-hearted and whimsical boy that does not feel nor desire the responsibility that comes with such a lineage. Olivier is rather blunt and has difficulty reining in his snarky comments. His twin encourages his sense of humor, as she is quite witty herself. Olivier can be mischievous at times, though he is greatly encouraged in this by his sister. He sometimes finds it difficult to claim responsibility for his family, but he recognizes the necessity of doing so.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Sword fighting
Reading
Horseback riding
Competent athlete
Background:
Olivier was the second born child of his immediate family, born before his twin sister. His position in the Deveraux family was such that he and his twin had much more freedom than others of their blood. Early on in life, Olivier and his sister were nearly inseparable. The two attended lessons together, read together, rode together, and played together. It was only when Olivier began his battle training that he was separated from his sister. The differences in their education became more pronounced as the two aged, but Olyvia always seemed to find a way to relate to Olivier. Though he greatly enjoyed the athletic training he underwent, Olivier would have rather spent time with his twin. But the reality was that his hobbies involved sword fighting and hers sewing. During his teen years, Olivier spent a great deal of time with a sword in his hand and little time with his sister. He excelled at fighting, but was always underestimated due to his naturally thin build. Olyvia was always there to listen to his venting, though, and the two remained as close and mischievous as ever, despite the gender gap that only seemed to grow larger between them as time passed. Now, with his sister absent and more responsibility being placed on his shoulders, he finds himself in a predicament he is not entirely sure he can face.
Writing Sample:
Olivier pressed his left foot into the stirrup and boosted himself into the saddle, settling into the familiar slump of the seat as he adjusted the reins in his hands. His stallion shifted from hoof to hoof, blowing and nickering as it pulled and strained to be off. Olivier smiled a little as he pat the horse’s muscular neck. Its thick mane was tied up in loose braids, each braid held in a loop by red ribbons. The effect was hardly dignified, but Olivier supposed it was just the sort of ornamentation that one expected out of a nobleman’s horse. He was tempted to untie the poor beast’s mane, but the stable hands had probably worked at those braids for hours, so it would be unkind of him to unravel their work before it could be seen.
With a soft click of his tongue, Olivier applied just enough pressure to the stallion’s sides to encourage the horse into a restless walk. The stallion pranced with each step, knees lifting and neck arching regally. Olivier kept his shoulders straight, letting his hips move with the horse’s jolting steps. Such was the seat of an experienced horseman. Let the shoulders do the work and you’d wind up on your rump, or so experience had taught the boy.
Olivier’s horse took its place just behind his brother’s. The procession was impressive, every horse draped with ornaments and satin insignias kept in place by fine leather saddles. Olyvia rode just beside Olivier on a handsome mare whose mane was tied up with the same red ribbons used in Olivier’s horse’s mane. The sight made Olivier chuckled to himself as he gently pressed his stallion’s mouth to encourage the horse to calm down and keep a safe distance behind his brother’s horse. Leather creaked as Olivier adjusted his seat, keeping his heels pressed down and the flats of his feet planted firmly in the stirrups. It felt good to be riding, thought Olivier would rather be galloping alone or with his sister than pacing behind a group that made their way through gawking crowds that unnerved the horses and men equally. It would be a fine thing to go for a ride out in the countryside, Olivier thought. Perhaps he could convince Olyvia to ride with him tomorrow afternoon, though the chill in the air might dissuade her. Well, she liked riding as much as he did, so it couldn’t hurt to ask. The twins saw so little of each other, what with their separate duties and all, that it was worth the effort to gain some time together.
