Character Name:
Joanna Montefiore
Age:
17
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
July 23, 1409
City / Region:
Seravino
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]:
Montefiore
Played by:
Caitlin Stasey
Appearance:
A young woman of medium height, she has the standard Montefiore coloring of dark brown hair and eyes, and olive complexion. Joanna wears her hair long, considering it her best feature, often dressed with some sort of ornament or ribbons. She is slender, but with a feminine figure that she enjoys adorning in flattering colors and fabrics. She also enjoys wearing jewelry, often a pair of dangling earrings or a chain with a pendant that nestles into the hollow of her throat.
Personality:
Joanna, the second youngest sister of five, is the sweet sister. Daniela is the mature and regal bride, Elisabeta is a cunning young woman, Catarina the plotter, and Allegra is a girl of many disguises. Of the four, Joanna is content simply to live and let live. There is an air of gentleness around her, a sweetness that is fortunately not cloying. She has a soft heart, one that can be easily bruised but forgives twice as fast, and a generous nature.
That does not mean, however, that Joanna is overly meek. On the contrary, she possesses the notorious Montefiore temper and a passion for defending those who are less able to protect themselves. Her courage comes from the moral conviction that Right is right, no matter what, and that everyone is capable of choosing that Right Thing to Do. Those who fail to do so come in for a share of Lady Joanna's rarely displayed sharp tongue and cutting remarks that express her disappointment in that person's choices. More than one person has found themselves run out of Duefuemi after ruffling this gentle dove's feathers.
Infinitely loyal to her family, Joanna would sooner spill her own blood than betray the Montefiores. Obedient to her brother, she trusts Niccolo to have the family's best interests at heart, occasionally striving to remind him to be the Duke that he was not necessarily raised to be, but the man she has always known he could be. A frequent companion to their mother, she also hopes to aid her brother's betrothed in assuming her role and smooth her path as the future Duchess.
Close to all of her sisters, even if she does not share their perspectives, Joanna wants only the best for the Montefiores, and will do what she can in the promotion of that.
Background:
Born the seventh of eight total children to the Duke of Seravino and his Duchess, Joanna was a quiet, sunny little girl with large, dark eyes and a wealth of dark hair. Blessed with a sweet nature, she did not mind waiting for her share of attention from her parents, the nursemaids and the governesses that looked after the five Montefiore daughters. Seeing her brothers and sisters happy and tended to made her happy.
From the day of her birth, Joanna was always her mother's little helper, insisting on accompanying the Duchess on her charitable works and devoting her small fingers to sewing and knitting for those less fortunate. Her lessons were endured as a means to earning the rewards of going to help her mother with the myriad duties expected of the Duchess, or finding little ways of aiding her older sisters as they prepared for their adult lives. When Allegra was born, she delighted in looking after the baby, and playing hide-and-seek with her little sister. This became even more true with the passing of their mother.
Allegra was unfortunately much better at hiding than Joanna was at seeking! Despite that, Joanna was content, growing into a quiet young woman, still largely innocent despite being surrounded by more worldly sisters and brothers. Close to all of her siblings, she was devastated when first Giuliano, and then Alberto were killed. The feud, Niccolo said, was behind it, something that she has never understood. Why the feud has continued is a mystery to Joanna.
Grief did much to subdue the gentle dove, and she threw herself into the charity work as a means of finding a purge for her pain. Their father was Allegra's especial care, something Joanna refused to intrude on or take from her sister. Instead, she began to range further afield from Duefuemi, trusting to the people whom she aided to keep her safe. So far, her faith has been fully justified, and no harm has come to her.
The time for this to end is drawing near, she knows. Niccolo has returned from Nacimiento with his Sandoval betrothed, and soon the lady will be the new Duchess. With that transfer, Joanna knows that the time for her older sisters and herself to marry is coming. For now, however, she hopes to make the transition easier on both the lady and her family, exerting her influence to keep the peace.
Writing Sample:
Her eyes twinkled at Sebastian; seldom did their younger brother come within her sights for teasing. That was better reserved for the eldest brother and the youngest, as well as their sisters. Angelia's favored target remained Dante, having a surprising sensitivity to their younger brother's distaste for being teased. "From the last one who managed to revive from her swoon, all I could get was that he was just so handsome, she couldn't stand it. She had to rip her clothes off." She stole a quick look towards the door, knowing that if their father or one of the myriad aunts overheard such an indelicate remark from her, the lecture would be quite stern.
Her interest returned to her twin with the mention of available funds, yet Sebastian beat her to the caution. Wise words from their younger sibling, matching her thoughts ideally. Angelia was glad to know the funds were there yet she did not intend they should allow the amount to turn their heads, nor instill in them a sense of arrogance. Instead, she smiled into her tea, curious as to Dante's reaction from this near-scold from a younger sibling.
