It was the worst afternoon of her life and everyone seeing her covered in mud wasn't even the worst of it. Not even the pain in her ankle compared to the confusion in her emotions or even the fear behind the girls eyes that she tried desperately to cover up. The forest around their home and to their village had been a refuge for all of in the Deschenes family. The evil bandits from her brother's stories were never something the girl would have dreamed of being there, and yet one had followed her in the forest. How long had he been stalking her? Why hadn't he taken her before Daragh arrived? Or was it all a bluff to strike fear? The teenager didn't know the answer to any of these questions which bothered her all the more.
The worst of it though had been the sounds, the sounds of ripping flesh, the sounds of the struggle, the blood, and the pain. Her cousin did what he had to, she understood stood that clearly, but being witness to it had stunned the usually talkative Gwyn. She had stayed silent through all the fretting from her family, her father's scolding, to Analisse helping her getting cleaned up, and even to the questions of what had happened. The girl wasn't ready yet to tell them nor did she really know what to say? A bandit threatened to kidnap her? Daragh killed a man? None of it seemed completely real just yet, nor did it sound right to say aloud. Perhaps, the whole thing had just been a cruel nightmare? In the morning Gwynevere would wake up to the world being normal again and would stop hearing the sounds every time she closed her eyes. First thing she would have to do would actually be to fall asleep.
The bath had washed away all the dirt and mud that was caked on her form which was a minor relief all things being considered. Now in her night gown Gwynevere was propped up on her bed with her back leaning against pillows leaning against the headboard. Her twisted ankle was propped up on a pile of pillows keeping it elevated to help with the swelling although it didn't do much for the pain. Sleep was going to be something she would get little of that night with the throbbing in her foot and the disturbances in her mind. Her stitchery, a book, and her journal lay all on her nightstand as options for her to entertain herself yet all the girl could do was stare out her open window towards the darkening forest. Were more of them out there lurking in the shadows?
