The family of House Vann is relatively new to the scene of Archades nobility. Land grants along the northern edge of the Sea of Acasa were given to Herzig Vann, a knight of small renown, in the early 13th century. Herzig accepted the grants as a retirement of sorts, finally settling down and growing his family, among other things.
The small villages within his land were mostly composed of fishermen. With his careful direction and guidance, he was able to begin increasing the villages prosperity. Docks are enlarged or moved to accommodate the drafts of bigger ships, and slowly over decades the villages themselves expanded.
Herzig did not live to see the full fruits of his labors, passing in his sleep in the late 1240’s. His eldest son, Petrus continued the plans of his father and saw their fruition within his lifetime, naming the largest of the villages, Fischerei. Petrus Vann passed in the year 1273, and the Barony passed to his second son, Lothar.
Lothar’s rule was peaceful, and for the most part uneventful, ending in the year 1304. Emmerich Vann continued the line until 1325 when he succumbed to an illness partially brought on due to the blight that had spread throughout Archades.
His only son, Herzig II strove to bring medical practitioners to the largest village, and was able to entice a small number with research grants and promises of housing and support. While nothing like the facilities of the cities or other establishments, the practitioners were able to devise medicines for some of the most common ailments attributed to a life aboard ships and boats.
Lorenz Vann succeeded his father in the year 1368. Lorenz’s rule began a time of raiders from the seas and smuggling. Unable to convince his count or the local admiralty to station ships at his harbors, Lorenz spent much of his reign procuring funds, resources and permission to build two war sloops to patrol the waters near his lands. A stubborn man, Lorenz caught a chill that could not be shaken off during a stormy outing on one of the sloops. He died in his sleep in the year 1402.
Werner Vann inherited from his father a much reduced issue of smuggling and pirating on the seas near Fischerei. Through the slightly increased trade, Werner petitioned and was allowed to increase the number of sloops to three, naming the new ship Sieg der Lorenz.
Gabriel Vann was born in 1404 and began his apprenticeship aboard the Sieg der Lorenz in 1417. He served in one capacity or another aboard the ship off and on for five years, trading time aboard ship with necessary studies at home. When he was eighteen, he was accepted to the naval academy/commissioned in the Royal Navy, where he has served since, rising to First Mate. He traveled to Bordelaix where he expected to receive command of his first ship, and by all accounts that is what was expected to happen by his superiors and family.
However, Gabriel has since disappeared and no one knows where he has gone, including his family. For now, the Lady Anneliese serves as the acting head of family , aided by her cousin Alaric as Vasile continues its season of chaos without a duke. Hopefully, peace will soon return... and so will Gabriel.
