Character Name: Franz Ashton Delamara - ‘Ra’
Age: 23
Gender: Male
Birthdate: August 9th
City / Region: Lavigne / Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Born - Delamara
Played by: Augustus Prew
Appearance:Franz is often described as a pretty boy. He has wavy dark locks of hair on his hair, which hang in a shaggy mess around his ears. He has a heart shaped face, with prominent cheekbones and jaw. His eyes are dark and bright, they carry an intelligence in them but also a deeper sense of romance and life. These features, so similar to his brothers, give him something of a gentle look. He’s tried to grow a beard, to appear manlier, but has found that he cannot and that his narrow mouth is destined to be hairless. Though he tends not to smile too often (unless surrounded by family) he has a cheeky-happy grin, which is endearing and playful
Franz wears a whole plethora of costume, dress-up and disguises, including the one he sometimes wears in front of his family. He likes colours but he also likes practicality in his clothing. Being tall and lean, with square shoulders and strong legs, he build to be quick and agile and needs his clothing to move as he can. Often, Ra wears black, black and black. Sometimes he might stretch to a little grey or brown but unfortunately, despite his love for colour, he dresses darkly. It’s a requirement of his life. Just 5’7”, he is slim in his build, with gentle and a tame look about him. Despite being short, for a man, he carries himself with an air of charisma and pride.
Personality:
Mr Strong & Silent type – the quieter of his siblings, he is usually the last to speak his thoughts on any matter. Giving time and attention to thinking over the options and his opinion on things. People often mistake this care for thought as ‘slow’ or ‘ill-mannered’ but Ra is far from it. He is strong willed, strong minded and strong hearted in all accounts. He just enjoys being something of an enigma and he is very good at it. He also prefers not to make too many connections in the world outside his family and tends to limit his conversations. This makes him appear aloof and enigmatic – which he likes.
Mr Family Values – Being a Delamara means his family is almost everything to him. The death of his father simply hammered this home to him. Around them he is a different, softer and more playful person. Around his sisters and cousins he allows himself to be young and carefree and to enjoy the world around him. Feminine looks, he is also a little feminine in nature, having an enjoyment in fancy clothes and talking of art and nature. He could sit with the women of his family and gossip with the best of them, drinking fruity drinks and giggling on the high of life. This warm side of him makes him a good brother, a loving confidant and handsome romantic. His mother believes he will make a good father, having always been patient and kind with children, sometimes he prefers the innocence of their company than the politics of the court room.
Mr Hot & Cold – Franz has a bi-polar sort of personality. He either likes you or he doesn’t and there’s no real explanation for why. It’s not instinct, it’s not logic, and it could be the smallest of things like the way you hold your wine mug. Though he doesn’t usually act on his personal feeling, usually he follows orders or reads a room a little before reaching out to converse, there have been occasions where he has snapped and lost his temper. It is like there are two sides to Franz, one side is light and angelic, calm and sweet and considerate and the other is darkness. This darker side of him sees in a narrow-minded, bitter sort of way. This side is prone to sins and in this darker mood he is often a man of jealousy and wrath. In this frame of mind he obsesses over the small stuff and can be rather cold-hearted and cool towards others.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Blade As the son of a household and second in line after his brother, it was important that he get training as a youngster on how to hold himself in battle. But he was never really made for hand to hand combat and would often camouflage himself and sit on wait for his masters to seek him out, before launching a speedy and brutal attack. Once, in a moment like this, he took out the eye of a guardsman with nothing more than a sharpened rock. It quickly became apparently that his skill was not in the field of war but in the shadows. His training turned to work with blades, daggers and knives which he could throw and use to cut in a million different ways. Of course, as a noble man he carries a sword – and he knows how to use it well enough too. Hand him a blade and Ra will be able to kill you with it several times over before you have had chance to greet him.
Shadow He is very good at being a chameleon, being smaller than most (as a child and now for a man) he is able to hide in a number of places and is an agile, avid hider. He can curl himself into a small ball, and has the patience to wait in order to spring out. This made him a demon at games as a child, hide and seek was always his favourite and here he practiced a skill for life.
Gymnastic Though never good at hand to hand or wrestling, it was noticed that he was fast and sharp with his movements and so Ra was given training with a street entertainer instead, to hone and develop these skills. He can twist and turn and flip-flop with the best of them, having no fear when it comes to swooping aerials, or even pouncing from roof top to roof top. He trusts his body to react, to carry him. Of course, he broke many bones from landing awkwardly, but these are all lessons learnt.
Artist In his feminine way he is an able artist and plays music very well. These are not learnt talents but gifts he was born with. They have been nurtured, but often in his spare time. He enjoys these things the most and can sit for hours under a tree or beside a river with his sketch book and is often caught humming a tune to himself as he goes about daily chores. These are qualities that shoo away the darker side of his persona and he always seems much calmer and happier for doing them.
Chef He loves to cook, he loves food and he loves to experiment with different herbs and favours. Of course, there often isn’t a need for him to cook – there are people to do that for him. But on occasion he will surprise his family with a little taste of a meal, or a little treat that he has made. He appreciates food from across the countries too, and has brought many recipes home with him from his adventures abroad. He believes, when it comes to food, you should at least try those things you know you are not going to like- so that you can explain why you might not like them.
Background:
Three years younger than his older brother, he was the apple of his father’s eyes from the moment of his birth. Of course, there was a love for the girls in the family, they were beautiful children, but a son was something much more important wasn’t it? And with the darkness surrounding Dederik’s birth, Ra was very quickly his father’s favourite. He got use to sitting on his father’s knee at the dinner table (as a toddler) and he got used to being laughed at for his childish indiscretion rather than being scolded for it. Ra was a quiet child, often more inquisitive and curious in his ways, rather than shout-y and demanding. He could sit, happily for hours, and listen to his father and uncles talk or he could sit, happily for hours, in the kitchen and watch the cooks. Even as a toddler he loved the smell and spice of food.
But as he got older, it appeared that Ra wasn’t as special as the rest. He didn’t have an academic apt as Alexandrine did, wasn’t good at maths or fishing as Abby was. And as the rest of his siblings seemed to band together in their friendship, Franz seemed like the odd one out. He kept more to himself, would stand in the corner and watch them play rather than choose to join in. It wasn’t that he didn’t care, he just didn’t seem interested in being social. In fact, he rarely seemed to interact with anyone and it became a concern that maybe he was a mute or stupid – quickly his father lost interest in him, what use was a dumb child?
It wasn’t until he was ten that Franz said his first words. It was around this time that he first killed something too. A bird had fallen out of a tree and had broken its wing. Instead of being a loving and caring child and running the bird to his mother to be tended and loved, rather than crying over the loss of a fallen friend, Franz got a stone and crushed the bird- putting it out of his misery and being merciful. Gabriela caught him and told their parents and siblings, she also refused to talk to him for several months.
But this unflinching nature of watching and killing set Ra on his path. His father finally had a use for him. He was taught to spy. To start with it was just little errands around the house, to spy on Dederik and his cousin Petra as they got into mischief, to watch his sisters for men getting closer than they should. This watching then became tests of acting, he would be set little challenges by his tutor – stealing salt from under the chefs nose, or a flower from one of the locked bedrooms. Ra finally found something he excelled in.
As he grew older the training became more focused on weapons work. As a lord he was expected to understand how to protect his family, but he had a skill with smaller blades – and a mean eye for throwing weapons. This skill was nurtured under the instruction of his father’s spy-master and Ra blossomed into the darker creature that he now is. It didn’t seem to bother him that his older brother had left to sail, or that his sisters were growing into beautiful women, no, he threw himself into his studies.
Of course, when Dederik went to see, his lessons took a less focused form and he was also instructed on how to rule the house, to take over as heir. He wondered, on occasion, if it was meant for Dederik to die at sea- or maybe it was hoped that he would never return from the oceans to take responsibility for the family. And thus, Franz was groomed as the reserve, as is always the position of little brother and second son.
On the day his father died, Ra was not at home. He had been sent on his final test. Out into the city of Bordelaix his master had hidden a message. He had to find it and return with it within two months, or all of his work would’ve been for nothing. While he was away he was without contact, as was expected, and it wasn’t until he came home that he realised what had happened and how things had changed. His victory was sullied and dirtied, but his father and grandfather’s death and his brother’s return home.
That night he remembered sitting in the study with his older brother, a man he barely knew. They both drank from amber glasses and sat in silence for the longest of times. Then Ra told Rik all about his training, of the secrets he had been keeping and developing for years. He explained that he was good at this- that he never enjoyed being trained to be a lord as much as he enjoyed his training in the shadows. Telling him this seemed to lift a great weight from Franz and from the morning after that evening he became more personal with his family, making up for the bonds that had been bitter and cool and discovering a new love and life in them that he had not had before. His fathers death, though tragic, seemed to unlock Ra from the cage he had been unwittedly kept in.
He asked Dederik permission to continue his study, to become a useful alley and tool for the household and since then, Ra has taken to cleaning up the dirtier side of court life and hose little accidents that happen along the way.
He had moved on from killing birds to men. And though he sometimes shed a prayer for their damaged souls, he never seemed changed by their deaths, if anything the more he let the darkness become part of him, the more he looked for warmth from his family.

This was the moment. From this moment on everything would change.
He sat in the chair opposite his brother, straight backed, knee crossed over at the ankle and tried to look relaxed. Drinks were poured and still the silence hung in the air.
There was really only one thing to do, wasn’t there? Did he just come out and say it?
Ra reached forwards and took the mug in his hand, bringing the sweet alcohol to his lips and taste it on his tongue. He appreciated the warm feeling it gave to his mouth and he looked down into the amber colouring as it swirled about so calmly.
Replacing the mug on the table between the both of them he looked for a long time at his older brother and then said;
“Father has had me trained to spy for him, Dederik. That is my duty here.”
There it was. Out there in the open.
What would his brother think of that?
