The trek through the mountains was fairly uneventful. Only once did they have to halt what they were doing so that Collin could speak with one of the Gerstner tribesmen and garner passage without harassment, but otherwise things had gone about as smoothly as could be expected. The Delacroix scouts primarily took the night shifts for watch whilst the royal guard assisted primarily during the day. Bastien’s evening watch was tonight so as they broke for camp he grabbed a quick chunk of bread and cheese and retired to his post near the trees to keep watch.
One of the scouts found a great position with a nice vantage point for him, making it easy to keep an eye on the princesses as they went about their business. Naturally there was some usual kerfuffle whenever Antoinette came along for any type of ride. Every night they had to build up and then tear down the royal tent so that she could get dressed properly in her usual pomp and circumstances. Being at a post was actually a nice reprieve given that he could stay away rather than close up.
But the other interesting factor was the Baron Delacroix’s children. It appeared to be a total of ten, give or take a few additional relatives, had gathered with them to make the journey. The eldest daughter was around Juliette’s age, and the rest had varying degrees of energy and the two youngest in particular seemed to have no issue in cozying up to just about anyone.
In this time of introspection he immediately heard the gait of a young pair of legs approaching him quickly through the mountain woods. Blue eyes glanced over to find that the littlest avenger of Delacroix’s brood was about to ambush him yet again.
“Shouldn’t you be with your father?” He asked her casually as he whittled away at a stick with his hand-blade.
