Character Name:
Daragh Deschênes
Age:
30
Gender:
Male
Birthdate:
November 10, 1397
City / Region:
Forestier, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]:
Deschênes
Played by:
David Oakes
Appearance:
Tall and lean, Daragh has the brown hair and eyes that are the typical marks of his family. Because he looks too young, he keeps a trimmed beard and mustache to make him appear his 30 years. He typically wears forest colors in simple, sturdy fabrics, unless he is forced by custom to wear a nobleman's clothing.
Personality:
Daragh is considered by most to be a silent, stern man, but the truth is, he feels woefully unprepared for his role as Baron of Forestier. True, he was born to it, but he didn't expect to take on the role so soon. He has mostly adjusted, but the pressure of responsibility has toned him down from the freewheeling and fun-loving boy he used to be.
He still has his sense of humor, but it is a dry wit, with some self-deprecation mixed in. Daragh knows he is not perfect, he knows he makes plenty of mistakes. He has learned to laugh at himself when he does, but he makes sure that he learns from those mistakes too. Grateful that the people are forgiving, he tries to lead them from among them, a man of the people.
He is a family man, close to his brother, sisters and cousins. The Deschênes family is tight-knit and affectionate, and Daragh tries to appreciate the skills and talents of each family member, putting them to best use in support of the people. He works just as hard as any of the peasants, perhaps harder, pushing himself.
A faithful and loyal friend, Daragh will fight to defend those he calls friend. He prefers peace, but will not back down from battle. Occasionally, that leaves him grim, but those who know him know that he is serious when he has to be.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
- skilled hunter and tracker
- skilled archer (marksman)
- musician (lute)
Background:
Born as the eldest son of the Baron, Daragh's arrival meant the Deschênes line would continue. Followed by a brother and two sisters, the Baron and Baroness took pleasure in their family. Four healthy children were raised to know their family and the lands that had belonged to them for generations, and to revere the Deveraux family who stood as their liege lords.
As heir, Daragh was his father's shadow, learning what was needed as the future Baron. Taught to ride as soon as he could walk, to hunt once his hand could draw the string on a bow and how to balance the needs of the people with the requirements of nature, the boy took to the forest as if he was one with the trees. The proper lessons of a noble-born child were not embraced so much, but eager for his father's approval, he did his best to learn to read, write, figure and behave like a nobleman was expected.
He had no interest in a life at Court, but understood that he needed to know how to conduct himself so that he did not embarrass himself if he was called to his liege's banner. Taking his responsibility seriously as the eldest brother, Daragh made sure he helped his brother and sisters along in their lessons, and taught Breena to shoot with their father's blessing. Chasing after her taught him how to move through the trees, agile as a squirrel.
When he was nearly twenty, the role of the baron fell onto his shoulders. Temporarily, he thought, but Ahern's illness left him weakened and easily fatigued. Daragh would have to step up and lead Forestier, it was decided. Too many people depended on having a strong Baron in place. Though he doubted his readiness or his skill, Darah knew the time had come. Not only his family, but the people and even the King needed him. He took his place, full of doubts and fears, but he has grown more used to the burden of leadership.
Now at 30, he is a somewhat more sober, responsible man who has a strong love of his forests and his family. He knows that the line must carry on and he must marry, but he intends to see his sisters settled, his parents cared for and then he will choose a bride, one who understands him... and the forest.
Writing Sample:
High summer was a busy time of year for House Gardiner. Though the plantings were done, there was still plenty of work to be done. Late July meant starting to cut and dry hay for stocking through the winter months. The strawberries were finished, but there were other fruits coming ripe, and the weather in the region started to get a little chancy. Too much rain was as bad as too little rain when it came to the crops and the herds. Reed spent plenty of time in the saddle, inspecting herds, farms and water-flow.
But the mornings were his favorite times when he was in Lockewood. He could rise early and steal a precious hour or two in his green-houses, checking on his works in progress and updating his notes. Agricultural advancements weren't all that exciting to most, but Reed welcomed his people's new ideas. They had a few fields going this year that had not only been let to lie fallow last growing-season, but enriched with a new kind of compost. He was curious to see what the effects would be on the crops planted there.
