Character Name: Arrosa Ibarra
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Birthdate: 6.21.1404
City / Region: Gilboa, Estersea
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Ibarra
Played by: Marta Gastini
Appearance:
Arrosa is a pretty, albeit not extraordinarily beautiful, young woman. She has wavy brunette hair and dark eyes framed by a prominent forehead and elegant brows. Her nose is quite long and straight, and it dominates most of her facial features. Her jaw is compact and heart-shaped, with a small chin that fits her small mouth. Height-wise she is a little above average for a woman. Though her fingers are long and delicate in shape, they show the wear that is natural for someone who is dedicated to nurturing all forms of plant life. Arrosa's figure is very long and broad in the hips and shoulders, which gives her a sturdy silhouette. Her expression is usually neutral and cool, which gives off the impression that she is aloof.
Though it is more "proper" for a woman to wear her hair up, Arrosa prefers to keep most of it down. She enjoys the feel of its weight on her shoulders, and she is not bothered by the lack of propriety of her appearance. Fashion is not one of her major concerns. She chooses her dresses for practicality rather than pomp. Of course, her tendency to ignore her appearance does not help her seem more beautiful on the whole, but she has a homely beauty about her that is subtle but appreciable by those who recognize it.
Personality:
Largely a solitary being, Arrosa spends most of her time tending her plants. She prefers to be on her own, and is never bothered by a lack of social interaction. When she is with company, Arrosa is quiet and tends to listen rather than contribute. Though she is clever and has many personal convictions that make her silences uncomfortable at times, Arrosa resigns herself to the decisions and opinions of others, preferring to keep her own counsel rather than share her ideas and insights about the world. It is difficult to get Arrosa to open up to someone, and she has few friends, nor does she find herself in dire need of companionship. Arrosa does not feel very close to her family, either, and she would rather return to her home with the Gardiners than stay at home and fulfill her duty as a Ibarra. Still, Arrosa does not mind the fate that Zorion has in store for her. She is not a romantic sort of person--at least not where men are concerned--and she would be fine with any decent husband, so long as he did not expect her to change for him. Arrosa is, despite her resignation, very self-assured. She does not feel compelled to change her ways for anyone, and while she does not contradict others often, she does not agree readily with those whose opinions differ from her own.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Background:
Arrosa's earliest memories are mostly of her foster family, the Gardiners. She barely remembers her life with her own family. Early on in life, Arrosa felt pressured by her mother to behave, to be quiet and obedient, and much of her childhood was spent doing whatever she could to keep her mother happy. It was not a disappointment, therefore, when she heard she was going to be leaving the family to study with the Gardiners. She was not particularly close with any of her siblings, who were more rambunctious than she was. Arrosa spent most of her time before she left sitting sullenly beside her mother and doing whatever she was told to do. That changed the day she left to join the Gardiners.
At a young age, the girl was sent to live with the Gardiners so that she could learn about plants--how to tend them, mix them into perfumes, and harvest them. From the beginning of her tutoring, Arrosa spent the majority of her time in the gardens, using her hands to learn firsthand. Though she enjoyed the other subjects of her education, her disposition naturally tended towards living things. The young woman developed a reputation as a "whisperer," both to plants and animals. She naturally understood the beasts and plants around her, and this natural understanding helped her gain the knowledge she needed to quite easily. Living with the Gardiners, she gained many experiences even beyond the greenhouses and plants she worked with, but she never liked stepping into the public eye. Those around her understood her disposition, however, and encouraged her to develop her talents.
Naturally, Arrosa became close with the other girls learning her craft--namely, Lily Gardiner, Annemarie Gardiner, and Gwynevere Deschenes. As they shared common interests, they were comfortable with one another in a way that Arrosa was not with many people, and still isn't.
Not long ago, Arrosa received correspondence from her cousin, Zorion, which explained that she was to meet the family in Bordelaix and then return with them to Estersea. The idea did not please Arrosa, who thinks of her home with the Gardiners as the true place she belongs, but she is resigned to her place in the family and therefore will do what she is told without complaint.
Writing Sample:
The storm had weakened the sapling's hold on the fertile piece of earth Arrosa had planted it in some weeks ago. It pained her to see the roots peeking up at the sky, the branches of the plant leaning precariously towards the earth. With a soft sigh, the young woman gently guided the plant back into an upright position, keeping her delicate fingers on its stem--it was difficult to call such a weak post a "trunk," as the fruit tree was barely out of its first months of growth--as she tied it to a stake carefully. Having accomplished as much, Arrosa sat back and admired her handiwork.
"You'll be fine, little one," she said as she stroked the smooth leaves dipping in the slight breeze. It would be so rewarding to harvest the apples that would come later, when the tree grew taller than its tender and spread its branches out towards the sky. A smile colored Arrosa's lips, as gentle and tender as the smile of a mother towards her child. There were few pleasures greater than seeing a life bloom under one's fingertips, and this was an experience Arrosa knew well after years of growing and gathering.
Standing, Arrosa cast a glance at the sparse garden she had begun to plant upon arriving in Estersea. There were not many flowers yet--she had planted mostly perennials, in the assurance that the garden would have flowers in the years to come. The few annuals she had planted dotted the footpath that some servants had laid for her, at her direction of course. It felt nice to have a place that was largely her own, especially now that she was back with her family and far from her home with the Gardiners. It felt odd to think of her family as strangers, but that was largely what they were. She could count on one hand the number of times she had met with her siblings face to face, and that fact gave her some disquiet as she moved among the blossoming life around her. Arrosa had left her shoes close to to the door into her family's castle. She preferred to move among the plants with her feet bare, which allowed her to feel the tilled earth beneath her and, in a way, understand it better. To any observer, she probably looked rather wild, her hair spilling over her shoulders and her sleeves tied up past her elbows to keep them out of the way as she knelt to tend to her flowers. But Arrosa did not think about the opinions of others very often, especially not when she was among her own people--well, plants, but she thought of them as her people, the little lives that she held in her hands. It would be a beautiful garden in a few years, she knew. Still, a part of her longed to be back in the garden at home, where she knew the plants and knew they would return year after year, as they always had. Looking up at the open sky, Arrosa wondered if this place would ever feel like a true home. She could only hope that would be the case.
