Character Name:
Alfonso Capitani - ‘Alfie’ or ‘Fons’
Age:
17
Gender:
Male
Birthdate:
November 1st
City / Region:
Laguardio / Calandria
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]:
Birth - Capitani
Played by:
beau mirchoff
Appearance:
Ladies and gentlemen, meet prince charming.
This wonderful cut-out of a human-being is 6’1, with broad shoulders and a well-worked chest. He’s slender, lithe and athletic in his masculinity, youthful and always so full of energy. His build is tall and he holds himself straight with a play-boy, happy-go-lucky charisma to his stance. Alfie walks with an air of confidence about him and he knows how to enter a room in order to gain a little attention. Often his body language is open, and his manner with which he demonstrates himself is often warm and relaxed. His athletic build isn’t intimidating, but his fitness is a large part of this attractive bundle of man.
More captivating than prince charming’s beautiful, olive skinned body is his face. He has sparkling eyes, which dance to the deepness of his moods. His eyes are magical, because he has heterochromia. The left eye is a light, grey blue colour, the colour of the sky on a winter’s morning. The other is green, like the see, or a crisp autumn leaf. If you were to glance quickly at him, perhaps both eyes could be mistaken for an odd hazel colour, or a trick of the light, but on a return glance a sinking gaze is necessary in order to get lost in these sparkling, magical eyes of his. If he is happy, he is eyes tell his story, the green and blue both seem brighter, both seem bluer. And if he is feeling unwell or angered, then his eyes seem darker, almost brown in their appearance.
Paired with these attributes is a wonderful, full and captivating smile, which speaks of romance and trust and a full head of wavy black/brown hair.
Alfonso wears a leather cord around his neck, with a small plate on it. His father gave him these tags when he was a very small boy and he is never without them. They store the crest and name of his fathers favoured boy – the one that he died upon- and of course his father’s name. Also, on the cord, is a wooden and polished wishbone ‘charm’, which his cousin; Haratio made for him for his thirteenth birthday, to bring him luck for the first time the boy captained a sea craft.
He has two further pieces of jewellery he never takes off. The first is copper band on his left wrist, which is said to have healing properties. The coper band has a mermaid engraved into it, his family crest symbol and a reminder of just how close to each other, how important family is, to the Capitani name. Unusually the second piece is around his right ankle. It is a chain cuff, like that a slave might be found wearing. It is tight, but not uncomfortable and has been made around his ankle as there is no catch or lock to be undone on it. The cuff is thick and hard, but the material is light and does not pain him. It is a reminder of his slavery, but he wears it with a sense of pride now.
Alfie is a man who is inconsiderate towards clothing, he prefers practicality over beauty though he does indeed look dapper when he dresses to impress.
Personality:
Red-
The colour of passion, fire and often anger. This is a side of Alfie that is often well hidden. He is not easy to anger, he is not easy to upset or rise to a blood-boiling or destructive manner. But there is a rashness about him, which comes with a need to be heard and taken seriously. He had lost, lost his father, who should’ve been a key player in teaching him how to be a man – and that sits in the pit of his stomach dressed as a need for revenge on an unnamed assailant. Red is a colour of great energy, which Fons has, he is a strong-willed, determined and does not bow-out easily from a fight.
Yellow-
Happiness, and the colour of confidence, which Alfonso has a good measure of. He is not arrogant in any manner, but is more than happy to watch and observe and have the confidence to walk alone in the world without wondering to the opinion of others. He is happy with who he is, for the most part, and likes to make others happy too. But yellow is also the colour of sickness and Alfie has a sickness in that his memory is poor. It is a minor thing, sometimes he will struggle to think of the word he wants, or remember a name or a face – but it is nothing that stops him going about his affairs, and often it is nor more than a joke to be shared with his family. If he concentrates for long enough the thoughts and memories always come to his mind eventually, they’re just a little slow in their journey.
Green-
A relaxed and peaceful man, Alfie seemed to sooth and calm most rifts that rise up around him. He is patient and careful mannered and seemingly clam in most situations. He is a man who avoids confrontation, but is a good listener and an intellectual learner. Of course, this is also the colour of nature, where he feels welcomed and at home. More impressively, a lot of things seem to come naturally to Alfie and there doesn’t seem to be much he cannot do when he puts his mind in the right place to do it. As a boy, he of course has a natural curiosity for the world, but as a sea-fairing person this seems doubled.
Indigo-
Family is one of the most important lessons of the Capitani sea-people and Alfie has learnt it well. He is a family man, with a big heart and a kindness that he shows his family is spades. He is loyal, like a dog, but is open and candid with these people whom he loves. He is a bright and protective brother, a noble and honest son, and a playful cousin to his family. Like the colour indigo which reflects great devotion, wisdom and justice along with fairness and impartiality. He is a defender of his family’s rights to the end, showing undying, unquestionable love for them all.
Violet-
This purple colour, so close to blue, is the colour of intensity. Alfonso has an ability to be sombre in his manner, he is happy to spend a long evening, or a couple of days in complete isolation and though others worry about his mood, it is simply his way of re-balancing himself and taking a measure on life. He is a thoughtful child, but thinks too much on his fault or cause of things well out of his control; and the fact he looks like his father bothers him because he reads into signs that it bothers his mother too. Unlike most children, he does not become irrational or moody, but silence is a key indicator that he has become lost in his thoughts and often it will take him days to come out of this blue in his mood.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
Green-fingered –
He is capable with plants and herbs and will often be caught talking to the mangos as they grown and ripen. He has recently started to experiment with more complex growing, spices and flowers that he has brought back with him from across the water. Alfonso has a small patch of the family grounds to himself, where he grows his own things, keeps an allotment and some chickens and a few goats. He tends to it regularly, when he is home, and often the family eat from his labours.
Whip & Polearm weaponary –
It is customary for Capitani men and women to be good with combat and each of them have talents passed down through the generations. Though he does not seek to show off his skills in combat often or publically, Alfonso is an excellent fighter when arms with a pole-arm or whip. And, in competition or in display, he is magnificent and often unbeaten when armed with a Glaive or a Quarterstaff.
Sea Living –
Fishing, swimming, sailing, diving… if it involves water, Alfonso is skilled at it. He is a sea-fairing man, who has a love and respect for the water. He also has a measured amount of fear, for the water took his father, but so like the man he never came to know Alfonso is often at his happiest when he is off-land and out at sea.
Writing & Recording –
He keeps a journal, because of his sometimes defunct memory, but he is quick and easy with a quill. His accounts are by no means poetic, though he does turn his hand to poetry on occasion, but they are thorough and have a clear expression of detail. He often keeps the trade logs, staffing logs and other such paperwork for his family too, enjoying the plan and clarity of having things written down. Occasionally, he will write for pleasure, but he also likes to record the family history.
Character History:
He was born amidst a wave of children in his household, Rosa and Arlo – with whom he has a particular kinship, a friendship in the way that cousins are often the first friends and hold all your secrets. But quickly after this his sister and the twin ‘Vals’ were born. He treats all three of them as if they are siblings, protective and loving of them all. While of course, Lune is his favourite of the three, there is often no different in the way he treats them. The whole while he was growing up, it has always been the same and long does he hope it will continue.
As his mother had, he grew up with his own closeness to death. And, from a young age he had a strange and often morbid relationship with loosing people and their death. He was not old enough to truly remember his father, a young boy when the man passed. But he still feels the effects of it on his mother, and as he grows and turns more and more into the man who came before him, he feels his mother looks at him oddly and without kindness sometimes. He remembered her locking herself away, he remembered spending more time with his Uncles and Aunts, he remembers curling up with Lune is Aunt Trista’s bed for comfort after a nightmare, or sparing and playing with his Uncle Umberto during a long or rainy day when his mother abandoned her duty as a mother, too pained by her loss. But he is not bitter about this and does not hold her at arm’s length for her actions. He lost a father, but gained a much stronger bond with his family because of it and, part of the reason he is such a strong man is because of the way the family banded together to protect him and his sisters.
He learnt from his family about how to be a brother and a sailor, how to fight and cook and how to pass the time of day.
When he was eight, he had his first misfortune. After a cold and sudden storm caught him whilst he was playing in the bay, he was returned to his bed and sick with fever for many days. The fever broke, fortunately, but days turned into weeks and the boy was still bedridden and terribly unwell. He remembers his mother being at his bed sometimes, but also the way she protected herself – she buries herself in her work and her office so as not to lose herself to emotions- and so he remembers his Aunt Trista once more filling the role of comforter. The illness passed as the summer returned, but the family started to notice the slow effect on his memory. Sometimes he would stop mid-sentence and not be able to find a word. Once or twice, he has woken and not remembered where he was or who the faces around him were. The memory always came back, his brain always resets and corrects itself and now the little blips are a cause of laughter between himself and his kin.
At thirteen he was first allowed to sail, and was given a leather necklace from his mother that she had been keeping safe all this time. That first sailing trip brought love into his eyes and a passion into his heart and he quickly became hard to separate from the oceans.
This did not change, even after the second of his accidents.
Merely fourteen, he and an expedition were out late into the summer months, they had gone further than before and had been away for nearly 8 months. The boat was attacked on its return, their cargo destroyed and the men aboard, including Alfonso, were held captive by the pirating fleet. For nearly a year they were gone from their home, kept at the waters and kept to do many things. Those that tried to escape were fed to the waters and those that fought were killed in front of their friends. Finally, the ship came into docks at Laguardio. The missing lad and his crew were recognised, despite their thin and bedraggled appearance. It was a lucky escape for the boy, who had left at fourteen and was returned to his family almost a man, nearly sixteen.
These accidents have changed him, perhaps for the better perhaps for the worst. It brought him closer to his mother, who must’ve gone through hell at the time. But she hugged him on his return in a way she was sure he had never been hugged by her before- and the lad barely held the two of them up. But more than that, it has made him more thoughtful. Sometimes he talks about the things he saw, sometimes he goes into a darker place and it clear he is reflecting on the lessons he has learnt. But more than that, it encouraged him to think more seriously about combat. Under his uncle Galileo’s instruction, with help from his Uncle Umberto, he found his skill with a pole and the martial arts and athletics that went with the ability to defend one’s self.
The last year of his life has been spent being re-joined with his family, helping the business grow and learning how to best be helpful. He has rekindled his friendships with his cousins and his sister. But, in his endeavour to be a man also seeks to spend more time with the older members of his family. His Uncle Umberto, who had lost his wife in the time he was in captivity, seemed like as good a place as any to learn what it meant to be a man and to take care of one’s family…to one day have a family of his own.
Two accidents have been and gone… but they say these things happen in threes….
Writing Sample:
Alfie sat alone on the docks near their family dwelling. The sun beat down on his olive skin, warming the coolness away from his body. He had been out here most of the night, had seen the stars on the water be chased away by the morning sunshine and had seen the fishermen come out early to their boats and business for the day. He had no wished to join them, and his purpose for being out here was not one of fun or frolics today. His feet, bare, dangled over the edge of the wooden dock and into the water and he stared out at it. A sombre mood was not one that often took this boy, but today it had settled on him like dust.
Today was the day of his father’s birthday. The man was long dead. But still his mother seemed to mourn and that effected the whole house. So, perhaps with a little shame, he had brought himself away today.
Alfonso Capitani loved his family, above all else in his life he was loyal to them. But he felt that he pained his mother sometimes, so alike her lost husband. They had the same set about their jaw, the same dark hair and broad shoulders. And so, to spare his mother a little on a day that would be difficult for her, he put air and ground between them.
But being at the docks was his own sign of respect too – to the sea, which had claimed his father, and to the memory of his father also. The man, like Alfie, was a born sailor, with a love of the water. It seemed right to sit here today and enjoy the gentle wash of the tide and the caw of the gulls. It seemed fitting.
