”I wouldn’t do that if I were you.” Came the gentle threat from Ra’s lips as he felt the sharp prod of a knife at the lower part of his back. He knew who was wielding the weapon, he had noticed the street-rat several turns ago and had walked a little slower to give the boy confidence enough to catch up. He could smell the child had not washed or eaten a proper meal in days, the child smelt of death and mould and his own piss. But more than that, Ra’s keen eyes had seen the glint off the knife as the child carried it in his waistband. Knowing he was being followed, he led the child away from the main streets and into an alleyway where he stopped to tie his shoe.
On rising he felt the prod of the knife.
Today Ra had been in the market, looking at the trinkets and listening to the gossip of the stall owners. He was dressed in his usual black on black, which was also the uniform of many of the knights in the capital, but he did not wear a sign of which house he belonged too. He was a spy, collecting information was his life-goal and his only real purpose, so giving away who he was spying for was not a stupid mistake he would ever easily make. Very rarely did he appear at events where his family were concerned and often if he did go, to keep an eye, he was not too fondly introduced as ‘brother’.
More than that, Ra was a trained killer and dealt with the darker side of the Delamara estates.
This child, nor more than eight, was picking a fight with the wrong man.
”Giv’us your purse.” He boy demanded prodding Ra in the back with his knife a little further.
Ra rolled his eyes and sighed.
From there everything seemed to happen at three times the speed it should. Ra span on his heel and brought his hand up, palm first to knock aside the boy’s blade. It jolted from the kids hand as Ra twisted and snapped the little lad’s wrist mercilessly. The knife, now disarmed, skittered away down the little alleyway and into the gutter. Screaming in recoil from the snap of his bone, the child did not reach as Ra shoved him to the ground and pressed his knee into the lad’s chest. The boy was filthy and the tears on its cheeks made tracks in the dirt on it’s skin.
”I warned you.” Ra told the lad. ”Shut up and be quiet.” he added, slapping the child on the cheek to break him from his shock, and he kept his position, pining the lad until he became a little quieter.
”Please mister, don’t kill me.”
Ra’s left eyebrow tipped skywards…was he really that obvious a monster? He scolded himself mentally, usually he managed to keep the worst of the demons inside him from rising to the surface.
”I’m going to let you up, but only when you stop your noise. If you try to attack me, or run, I will kill you. Do you understand?”
The boy gulped air and nodded, silently.
Ra, with a sigh, slowly moved to his feet, beckoning the lad to the do the same.
