Character Name:
Nicolette Deveraux
Age:
26
Gender:
Female
Birthdate:
May 16, 1401
City / Region:
Bordelaix, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable]:
Deveraux
Played by:
Rebecca Ferguson
Appearance:
A surprisingly tall woman, Nicolette is blessed with a statuesque figure. Health glows from her skin, her eyes are bright and she dresses to reflect her royal state. Fine silks, trimmed in fur during the winters, rich colors and well-cut gowns hug her figure. There is a proud lift to her chin, but her expression is generally open, kind and alert. She is very good at controlling her features, trained into her since birth. Her voice is low and throaty, more like a purr, but it can be a growl when she is angered.
Personality:
Raised from birth as first a Princess of Archades, then its future Queen when her father realized he would not have a male heir, Nicolette is a very serious woman but when she smiles, she means it. She has had to be son and daughter both, trained in subjects that are typically left to the son. It has made her a strong woman, morally, emotionally, physically. Ethically. Alexandre Deveraux did his best to prepare his heir to take the throne.
She loves to read and to learn of new places, what they are about. Ideas that improve the lives of her peoples are found there. Nicolette likes to believe that she is a forward-thinking woman, one open to taking some risks and gambles when it comes to protecting her lands, ensuring prosperity and the like. She is athletic, taking time each day to ride, work out with the castle's arms-master and dance with her sisters.
Though she does not always see eye-to-eye with her sisters, Nicolette loves each of them dearly and wants only the best. She is occasionally over-indulgent with them, turning a blind eye to questionable behaviors in her heir Antoinette, her sister Mariette's shyness, and the rebellion in Juliette. She sees them as bright, beautiful, and bold. She also knows they can be trouble. Her cousins are regarded with affection, but her uncle is the one she is wary of. Family is important to Nicolette, but she also knows a viper when she sees one.
There are few people she truly calls friend but Jean-Luc is probably her dearest friend and closest advisor. She has absolute trust in him, and he knows her best. Their friendship has been viewed with suspicion by many, but he has brought the world to her when she needed it, and is honest with her when she requires it.
Ambitious, Nicolette hopes to secure the waning Deveraux dynasty and maintain the family's rightful hold on Archades through the instituting of new ideas of advancement, technology and communication. The idea is not always being met with welcome or with enthusiasm, but she knows it is time.
Background:
The eldest of King Alexandre's four children, Nicolette was not the son he'd hoped for. He never made his girls pay for the fact that their mother was unable to bring forth a son, but for a time, he was not the most attentive father. When Juliette was two, Alexandre decided he would groom Nicolette into a woman worthy of the throne. He was not keen on Archades under the control of a Queen, knowing it weakened the Deveraux grip on the throne, but he would make sure that his heir had enough steel in her spine to fight for their legacy.
Her early life was spent under her mother's supervision and a score of royal nurse-maids and governesses who taught the little princesses what was considered appropriate for their lives. She took to reading and writing like any other child, preferring the biographies and tales of the duchies. Maps were something Nicolette spent hours studying, when she wasn't playing with her sisters and the other children in the castle. They were taught dance, riding, basic skills to defend themselves as Alexandre refused to let his daughters stay ignorant of weapons use.
As she neared the age of 11, Nicolette started a course of training at Alexandre's insistence. Taken from her sisters, her hours were filled with more lessons, instead of play. When she rode out, it was with her father to inspect some aspect of the city or their lands. Dance was for after dinner, if he did not insist she join him in the study to face his questions on what she had learned lately. Or they would talk about what it meant to be the monarch, how to rule a country and people. Much more time was spent with Alexandre then with her mother or sisters, something Nicolette wasn't sure she liked.
Growing older, she understood that the lessons and lectures were to prepare her. Alexandre, against the counsel of his advisors, signed the Succession Act naming Nicolette as his heir. He immediately placed the heir's coronet on his oldest daughter's head, and began including her in the actions of the reigning monarch so that she could get practical experience in the responsibilities and duties of a Queen.
Nicolette was aware there were stirrings of trouble coming especially from the north. The exiled Sandoval family is rumbling with threats of retaking the throne from the Deveraux, and the Romanovs are a slippery family that bears watching.
She is not blind or deaf to some of her father's actions and poor decisions. There are plenty in Archades who see Alexandre as a tyrant, a despot and a King that deserves to be deposed. Try as she might, Nicolette can only do so much to counter the damage her father is doing to Archades, but she has learned that allies can be made on a personal level. Knowing that she would need those allies when her time came to take the throne, she has begun winnowing through the court to find those who have the most power, the ones who can do the most to help her secure her hold.
Nicolette does what she can to protect her sisters from her father. Each sister has a place in Alexandre's schemes, even if they do not know it, and she cannot support that. She will sacrifice herself first. Standing on the knife's edge is a balancing act she is improving at.

Tatianna looked at Marcus oddly for a minute when he encouraged her to remember the good times. He obviously did not know very much about Luther to make that comment. There was a reason, a good one, why her oldest brother was the one being Sacrificed instead of her. It wasn't her place to reveal Farrand-Calhoun secrets, though. "Perhaps you have that right. I have a new destiny, as you say, so I can begin to think towards the future, what-ever it might be." She smiled, trying to find that positive aspect in all of this. As far as Tatianna was concerned, Luther's death was probably going to be the opening of a brand new era of peace for Balfour.
Her fingers twitched before he caught up her hand, her eyes going wide as he smoothly touched his lips to her knuckles. He was very charming, she could already tell that much, and hoped she didn't sound too naive or stupid. Tatianna was not a sophisticated girl by any means. Letting his comment pass without remark, she thought on the name. The Romanovs held Old Havenwich, she knew. A family of scholars and eccentrics, for the most part, but he seemed like an exception to that rule. "Lord Marcus, then? Or should I come up with a new title just for you?"
