Enough was enough.
Mariette woke that morning with new resolve, determined that no matter what came her way, she would be herself and do what was hers without concern for approval, affection or justification. Since returning from their journey into the north, she'd allowed herself to be eclipsed by darker thoughts, set adrift by uncertainty and certain realization that she allowed to hurt her for too long. It was time to put that aside and to find her satisfaction and her purpose in what she felt was important. She did not need permission, after all.
One of her great pleasures was in philanthropy. Before they'd headed to Vasile, Mariette spent a good deal of her free time in tending to those less fortunate than herself. Her mother had instilled in her that those who had more had a responsibility to help those who had less. It didn't have to be large gestures; in fact, the small gestures done anonymously, or wide-spread often had the bigger impact. And surely there were others who shared her desire to do so? Nicolette had encouraged her sister to begin selecting ladies in waiting, those young noblewomen who would form their personal households. Mariette decided to solicit those who had giving, open hearts.
Seated on a blanket under a tree in the gardens, the third Deveraux daughter was enjoying the sunshine spangling through the trees as she found herself with a large slate tablet and a stylus, making a list. Mariette was half-lost in thought as she considered where to begin this new role she was about to adopt for herself but kept an eye and an ear out for anyone who cared to join her.
