Mateo was hard at work. He had taken his lunch already, but many tended to eat around this time so he knew there would be a lull in foot-traffic. This isn't to say it was rare for a customer to come by at this time, but rather he did not feel bad to get set to the work task with much concentration.
While he worked, he pictured in his head what would come of that gem. He was crafting a replica of a piece he'd been shown. He hadn't been allowed to keep it, but was asked to make the best he could recall from memory. He thought that was a poor way to guarantee the result you wanted, but would not argue with his patron. Of course, if they were off-the-mark, Mateo would refuse to hand over the poor product. The man was always very proud of his gems, and knew that it was his signature in the market. If someone traced a sub-par piece of work towards him, his reputation would take a heavy hit.
He was thus oblivious to the arrival of a client in his shop. In the front were many of his jewels, though kept in a cell of sorts to keep away would-be thieves. It still provided ample glance, however Mateo would gladly bring out and closer any jewel upon request. These ones on display were either new creations being held with permission for a time, or were crafted jewels he would sell to a patron who didn't wish to wait on a custom bit.
Further passed that display was a mirrored area, with a couple of chairs. There was also the passage to his work room, which is where he currently was. There was also a stair case to lead him upstairs, where his private compartments were.
