Character Name: Julien Deveraux
Age: 19
Gender: Male
Birthdate: Feb 14th
City / Region: Bordelaix / Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Deveraux [Birth]
Played by: Dave Franco
Appearance:
Julien’s appearance is impeccable. He is always clean, neat, tidy and well groomed. His face is clean-shaven and his hair is kept short and neat. Though often his idea of styling it is to run his fingers through it as part of his morning ablutions. His hair is honey-brown, the straight strands darker at the roots and naturally lightened at the tips. Where it to grow out, it would grow in curls that became blonder as they became longer.
Naturally paler in his skin-colour, Julien is trim and slender and often tends to carry in a slight bend, with curved in arms and shoulders. Unlike most of his family and perhaps surprisingly for a song of his father, he is not physically strong. Slender shouldered, when he stands to attention and manages his posture he is just shy of six foot two, something that makes him look even thinner without a mass of muscle to back up such a height.
His face is angular, much like his fathers, and his brow is thick and low. These features, though naturally handsome, make him look as if he is in a constant turn of thought. Which, is more than likely. Set in his delicate, almost feminine featured face, are two dark brown eyes that sparkle with an intelligent presence-of-mind. His eyes, so focused and sharp, give him an imposing presence.
Favouring finally crafted clothes, though usually without too much fancy or ornament, he is always well turned out. His clothes are always neat, his boots are always polished and his shirt always freshly turned out. Julien also has a partiality for hats and gloves, again they are often simple and comfortable in design. With this, he can often be found sporting his favourite cloak.
Personality:
Julien is not by traits a son of his father, rather taking towards his Deliambre mother in terms of personality. He has no aptitude for arms or combat, and quickly realised that he could not be seen as a great warrior either by physique or inclination. In a direct and heated combat situation, Julien is risk-averse almost to the point of cowardice. He is not a coward, though: he simply has considered the odds while being confronted with his lack of talent for this skill and has developed a distinct preference to battle it out using weapons more suited to his strengths and talents.
That weapon, his favourite, is his mind. Julien is intelligent and he knows it, employing his logical faculties with utter surity. He is not often outwitted in the intrigue and politics of the court, the world which he has chosen to make his mark on. A brilliant chess player, he views the politics and intrigue of Bordelaix as if it were another game of chess, albeit a very special one: one where players have the power to shape the future of the rules. He knows that to succeed in the circles he moves in, he needs to stay calm and sharp whenever he is around anyone, and avoids emotional entanglement, though he can get fond of the people he works with. Julien has rivals rather than enemies and holds no grudges (unless convenient) and tends to have allies rather than friends, preferring to keep his work and private life separate.
The driving force behind Julien's life is ambition and aspiration towards the highest standards. Like his father, he knows that royalty is merely a tool to be used in his pursuit of his goals. He is strongly conscious of his position as the youngest son of a youngest son and the waning status of his branch of the family as they get farther away from the crown, meaning he can't rely on social stature. His deepest wish is to make a name for himself and become his own man, a man his father could perhaps deep down be proud of, and become a councillor to Crown Princess Nicolette, whom he supports.
Julien's ideal is riding his talents to office. The rest of his ideals, though he has them like anyone else, are flexible and pragmatic. He supports Nicolette because he believes it is the best he can do for himself and his branch of the family, and has no particular attachment to the patriarchal or any traditions of House Deveraux. After all, if females can inherit, perhaps then there will be a room for minor royalty like himself to climb the greasy pole to power on their merit and ability.

Specific Skills or Abilities:
Intellect
This is his most important feature and his greatest talent. Logical, politically mind, a smooth operator and diplomatic. He has a brilliant mind, one of the most brilliant in his generation of the Deveraux family. He is skilled at rhetoric and courtly etiquette and possessed of a certain amount of charisma that makes him a natural at their application
Maestro
Despite his aspirations, Julien does enjoy his private life. He enjoys listening to music, analysing musical pieces in much the same way as he would the social situation. Coupled with an aptitude for music he shares with his younger sister, this has given Julien another skill which he likes to hone to perfection in his private pursuits (though he does perform): composing. Favouring the violin he is capable on any instrument that finds his hand and he enjoys writing music and playing it with his younger sister, Marie-Louise.
Character History:
Compared to his brothers, Julien Deveraux must have been a disappointment to his martially-inclined father from the very start. The youngest son of Jean-Luc Deveraux and Carina Deliambre was born early, leaving his physique frail and underweight. As he grew up and became healthier, it turned out that Julien's lack of strength at birth was not at all a temporary circumstance. In contrast to his two more martially-inclined brothers, Julien grew up into a slim youth without the broad physique usual in his family or expected of a Marshal's son.
Jean-Luc Deveraux's third son learned to speak at a remarkably early age. Growing up, he quickly became bookish and eloquent, learning to read and write equally fast. Would that he had similar physical skills, and he would no doubt have made a fine military strategist, but alas, young Lucien showed not the slightest inclination towards the military and the martial. While his brothers were playing with swords and running around the castle grounds, Lucien preferred the library and the corridors of the castle, reading works of history and immersing himself in the life of the court. His musical inclinations were also brought to the fore by numerous visits to the court composer and musicians, who started teaching him the violin at age 7.
It needs no remarking upon that when the first arms lessons came, Julien proved neither keen nor apt. This completed his reputation as a disappointment to his father, although it did nothing to lose him the love of his mother. The masters kept trying to teach him, but Julien had already made up his mind very soon that this was not for him. He would endure arms training for much of his youth, but never grew to appreciate it. Indeed, he developed an aversity for taking risks in battle, earning him a further reputation as something of a coward among the knights. His peers, at an age where knightly heroes were the prime examples, showed their disapproval of him, and he had but a few friends.
Julien soldiered on in a different field. His intelligent conversation and charm earned him favour with the court notables, who started teaching him about court etiquette and politics from age 12 onwards. In the library, the scholars were always keen to discuss philosophy, history and politics with the young lordling. He kept studying music with the court composer, making his first compositions, which he would perform with his sister, with whom he felt closest of all his siblings. Entering adolescence, Julien became determined to become his own man and prove that with his mind as his weapon, he could make his name just as much as with swords and polearms.
At age 14 his mother passed away, hitting both him and Marie-Louise, (who were close to her) hard. Of his two parents, his mother had been a source of encouragement in pursuit of his own strengths, and he dreaded facing his father without her. The fear was swept away when he saw how much his father suffered from the heavy emotions with no perspective to dealing with them on his own save running away from them. It made for a rare alignment between Julien and his father, and Julien's conversation helped his father grow over the death of his wife. It also strengthened his bond with Marie-Louise.
While his brothers have both been established in the army and the navy, respectively, Julien lacks such an appointment and has to make his own way to office. But he is well-prepared: his years of studying with the members of the court have left him with an impressive array of skills and, more importantly, a deep and ongoing awareness of the political realities within the Realm.
[taken from original profile]
He has grasped the opportunity to work with Nicolette. His inept ability to swing a sword has left him in better stead of kinship with the ladies of the family. Naturally, conversation with his brothers could be difficult – growing up he was always aware of their different strengths . And so, he often took part in conversations with the women of the house. His study of philosophy and history made his conversation more interesting to them and on many occasion he would sit with the Princesses, particularly Nicolette, discussing the way of the world. His ambition to rise up the social hierarchy started as charm, to charm a cousin for his own advances, but he found he rather enjoyed the company of women more than the company of men.
Starting in the inner circle of advisors that Nicolette chose to surround herself with, Julien now feels that he has her ear on most matters. He provides a support network, as advisor and kin, his mind sees several moves ahead and he speaks words as if they are daggers or poisons – armed to infect and destroy. This is something he can offer, this is a service he can do that he is incredibly good at and Nicolette sees that, Julien believes that she is clever enough to know that his support to her is worthy and uncontested by others.
The world is continuing to change around him and Julien very much hopes that he can be a part of that change. Through his support, of course, but in making a lasting impression on his brothers and father also. Proving he is worthy, without steel in his hand, is a very fine goal indeed. History is in the making and Julien has every intention of being a part- a central part – of it.
Writing Sample:
The blue/black ink swelled from the pot, rolling down from the shattered well in a spillage such as a dark void. It covered the pearl-white of the parchment Julien had been writing at and he stared for a moment, as the world seemed to slow, and the disaster continued its strike. Blotting it would be useless and the work he had been completing would be destroyed. Rising, his chair scrapped back noisily and he stepped back, watching the dribbling stream of ink run off the edge of the desk and onto the floor.
Pat
Julien winced.

He brought his thumbs to his temples and pressed the pads there, pressuring his mind to strengthen and resolve this latest issue.
Pat
No, it was no good, no thoughts would be wittingly or unwittingly provoked until he cleaned up the mess that irked at him. Julien liked things to be neat, and tidy, everything had a place. It was practically obsessive of him. This, this chaos was disturbing.
Troublesome.
