Lia had come to the quietest place she could find. The girl, in her twenty-first year, was so afraid. This was only her second time away from her home, this was only the second time she had ever gone through the gate of the family farm. It was the furthest she had travelled, ever, in her life. She was surrounded by people she didn’t know, people she couldn’t trust and she felt heat under the scar on the edge of her jaw, an itch as the uncomfortable feeling of being outside of the safety of their home made her feel nauseous. In turn, the feeling sent a chill down her spine and the girl shivered, despite it being a warm day.
For the first time since everything had happened she missed Nino. He had been strong, bold, the family knight- the family protector – he had been those things, but he wasn’t any more. And he wasn’t here to look after her now.
A tear rolled down the girl’s cheek and she swiftly brushed it away.
She had a guard with her, two in fact. They stood a few paces away from the bench where Lia had sat down. This was all too overwhelming. She wanted to go home. She wanted to back to a place where the land was familiar and the faces were faces she knew. Of course, she couldn’t tell her family this- they would understand, they would offer advice and soft words and be nothing but supportive- but she would feel like she had failed them all over again.
All of the families were here. So too should their family be. And as head of it, though recently made thus, Lia had to step up her game. This would not do.
A second tear rolled down her cheek and for a second time she forced it away.
