Tristan was a man conflicted. On the one hand, he did not regret the exchanges they had in the slightest. The kisses were sweet, the embraces warm and her personality shone like the sun at the height of summer. Indeed, even if she would deny such a comparison, Mariette Deveraux was akin to an angel upon the earth. On the other hand, he was pragmatic enough to understand that the future for the two of them was murky at best. Was that such a horrible thing, though?
In the past few weeks, the knight had had many an opportunity to observe the various nobles in play, particularly those that are married. A few of them seemed content in their marriage, while many more were merely viewing the marriage as a business arrangement. They were partners in a venture, nothing more. Tristan supposed that’s how most marriages ought to be given the history of the institution. Yet, for understandable reasons, he found the whole thing incredibly sad.
Yes, nobles were meant to serve the people, but they were still people themselves were they not? Did not deserve a modicum of happiness? Did they truly have to settle for contentment? The more pragmatic members of his family would simply say… yes. Tristan, however, rejected such fatalistic thinking. Life was what one made of it.
The tournament was coming up. Regardless of their future together, Tristan felt an earnest conviction to gain Mariette’s favor. This was borne only from his deep affection for her, but also his highest respect for her. In Tristan’s eyes, Princess Mariette was the best possible princess they kingdom could have and it would be his sincere honor to ride for her in the tournament.
Thus, he found her during her typical evening walk in the gardens, during which she reflected upon the day. And as always, when he did find her, he could not help but stop and gaze at her thoughtfully.
