There was one unwritten, iron-clad rule in the Tesoro household: Sophie did not venture out of the house alone. If a family member was not available to accompany her, the better to keep her on task and ensure she returned safely home, then she was firmly instructed to bring along one of the footmen. Most of the time, that need for an escort was not an issue; Santino or Giulia were often willing to go out with her into the city and serve as her anchor to reality.
Today, however, was a different matter. Feeling restless, Sophie wanted to visit the markets. She had a need for some supplies to continue the project that served to occupy her mind, yet Santino had already departed on business of his own earlier in the day. Her beloved twin was not feeling well, lying down to banish a sick headache and she did not have the selfishness to ask Giulia to leave her darkened room and risk worsening her pain.
On the other hand, remaining at home when she was restless promised to be dangerous. Risky though it was, Sophie decided to leave the house, completely forgetting about taking one of the men with her. She took stock of herself before she did, repeating Giulia's typical list to Make Sure Sophie Was Acceptable to Go Out. Glancing down, she nodded to see she was wearing a proper, clean dress with the sash tied neatly about her waist. Picking up her hem, she confirmed that her shoes actually matched for a change. A hand patted her head, feeling her hair was neatly braided. Satisfied that she'd met Giulia's standards, not another thought crossed her mind as she took her leave quietly.
Twenty minutes later found the blonde pixie of a girl wandering the markets with a distant look in her eyes and an occasional twitch or swat at something invisible to the human eye. Sophie was hopelessly lost and growing frustrated with her inability to navigate around the stalls to find what she wanted. She couldn't find Santino either, adding to her increasing unhappiness. Stopping at one point, she tugged on her braid in the hopes of gaining some clarity or a clue as to where she needed to go.
Perhaps slipping free of her leash had not been the wisest choice. Giulia would not be very happy with her, Sophie knew, bowing her head. She wished desperately in that moment for help, any help, to come to her, tipping her head back to stare up at the sky. Was the Triune listening?
