She seemed blithely unaware of the internal conflict raging within him and the resulting discomfort it evoked in the knight. Sophie had not intended to bare the poor man's soul to the bright light of day, let alone compel him to inspect it, yet it was a strange skill she possessed, one that greatly contributed to her reputation as an oddity. By inadvertently forcing him to realize the truth, he was faced now with the choice of whether to attempt the purge and start healing, or refuse and allow the wound to continue festering. Neither were easy decisions.
Her head stayed on his shoulder as he protested the chance that the wound in question would heal. Sophie heard the knight-man out, listening to his objections quietly. They were words she had heard before, nothing unusual about them. Truthfully, they were excuses for his very real (and understandable) fear, but he was not ready to hear that part yet. "I could tell you yes," she finally answered him, "and why but you're not ready to believe me. You are afraid of your pain, and you are afraid that it will cost you what you love. Until you understand that half of love is trust, and trust requires courage, you won't share your pain."
The sunshine and the warmth of his body was starting to make Sophie sleepy, a hand patting away a kittenish yawn. Giulia would not want her to sleep in the open like this, vulnerable and unprotected. She blinked drowsiness away and sat up, looking at him with one of her rare, sweet smiles. "You are right. Some people call it gumption. You have it, knight-man. You have it in abundance."
As she said it, her head lifted as the city bells tolled the hour, reminding her that she needed to return home before she was missed. Hopping to her feet, Sophie curtsied to him. "I have to go. But I will find you again, knight-man." Boldly, she leaned forward and playfully pressed her finger to his nose. "Good-bye!" Like a golden whirlwind, the capricious form was skipping off through the streets, no doubt leaving one confused knight in her wake.
