In the intervening days between excitements, Anton opted to seek out his younger brother with a bottle of particularly fine Terre Verdan port and two glasses, the better to enjoy the soft evening air and catch up. Julien was far harder to pin down than Pierre, especially now that he was officially in service to their cousin Nicolette. Anton was prodigiously proud of his younger brother, of course, so long as Julien didn't seek to put on airs for his newly acquired post, not that he anticipated their father allowing any such nonsense. Humility was a watch-word of their section of the Deveraux line.
Knocking on the door to what likely served Julien as a study, he listened for any sounds of movement within to confirm his brother's presence. Julien was a hard-working young man, diligent nearly to a fault. No doubt that was another inherited trait from their father, one each of his children possessed in spades. Still, the hardest worker deserved an evening's respite and it would be a shame to let truly excellent port go to waste. If Julien hadn't eaten, Anton would see about obtaining some food to add to the congenial atmosphere.
He hadn't been able to locate Pierre, no surprise there. Their eldest brother was likely standing guard over Nicolette or one of their cousins as part of his duties as a Claviger. Or he might be dancing attendance on the young Romanov lady with whom he was taken, for all Anton knew. Regardless, there would be other times with Pierre. Tonight was about Julien, him, and a bottle of port.
Now, where was his brother?
