Character Name: Stephane Deveraux
Age: 26
Gender: Male
Birthdate: August 11th
City / Region: Bordelaix, Faucheux
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Born- Deveraux
Played by: Alexander Skarsgard
Appearance:
Typically a Deveraux. Simply put Stephane is tall, blond, with blue eyes and a regal statue. 6’2 his frame is lithe and strong, well worked and toned with muscles that are defined and often shown off with great pride. His shoulders are often open and drawn back, chin held high and masculine in all respects. Atop his head is a crop of golden blond hair and, naturally, his eyes are the colour of stormy waters; blue.
Stephane takes time and pride in his appearance, both in its physical shape, but also in what he adores himself in. While his clothing is usually dark he often wears ornate garments befitting of his rank as Prince. But more beloved than his day to day wear is the finery of his armour. Stephane's suit of armour is considered to be a masterful work, consisting of a fitted barbute, gold-plated steel cuirass, faulds, and sabatons over a layer of finely crafted black-stained ring mail. Stephane's cuirass, as well as his heater shield bare the Lotus of House Deveraux, though it has been coloured black.
Personality: A more in-depth look at what makes this character tick. Please include character ambitions, goals, virtues/flaws. Once you've finished this, we suggest that you reach out to players of your character's family members and have them read it, the better to help establish family relationships - this is especially important for characters who have siblings or parents in play!
From Father: Perhaps more like his father than any other member of his family, Stephane is under the strong belief that he should be King. Not Nicolette. From an early age he was expecting to be a man of great importance within the kingdom, pushed by his father to greatness. When it was revealed that there were other plans, Stephane showed a jaded, jealous and frankly, rather cruel side to himself. His father taught him scheme, to be sly, but above all, his father made him determined. Ambitious and motivated in dangerous quantities, Stephane despises weakness, strives only for perfection and is damned if there is failure in his life. He does not abide failure. Not ever.
From Mother: His mother is a Sforza, born of a house with the flare for the dramatic. This has manifested in Stephane, not only in his attendance to his appearance but also in founding a dastardly arrogance within him. His personal, learnt from the eccentricity of the Sforza line, is to wrap the poison he speaks in the beauty of a delicious red apple- to deliver a sting in the most kind seeming of words and to stir for the occasional and somewhat expected drama that surrounds him so that it escalates.
From Brother: Like his brother Stephane has a notable sense of self-entitlement and self-importance. He is not the sort of man to apologise for his behaviour. He was born into wealth and position and he lives and breathes in that manner every day. There is a great sense of pride about him and a good amount of ego too. Unlike his brother, Stephane has a better sense of control, but he does not believe himself to have limits either. Boundaries are for the poor- or for women.
From Sister: Noticeably subdued and a watcher; solitary-feeling is something he shares with Martine, and Stephane likes the quiet and peace of his own thoughts. He knows that there is a time for show and a time for thoughts and he is more often than not likely to be found alone when he is thinking. Not that he tends to sit down to do so, and can be lost on a walk for hours or out on his horse for lengthy time when he has need to think and distance himself from what is occurring around him. Something else that they share is their love of dancing- Stephane is a very capable dancer and enjoys the spirit of a dance. Though he is not always known for dancing with his feet; his tongue does most of the work in the courtroom and the steal of his blade is often unbeaten in battle.
From Uncle: A lot of time spent with his uncle has taught him a methodical and sometimes calculating manner. Not known to panda to the people he dislikes, Jean-Luc’s taciturn and detached nature has rubbed off on Stephane in many ways. Furthermore, Stephane can often appeared ruthless and seemingly void of emotion. There are glimmers of passion, but they are rare and often hidden beneath a hardened, old-fashioned and noble shell. The chill, with which he carries himself when met with barbed comment or torment (etc), can often be mistaken for patience- Stephane isn’t a hot-head, he doesn’t fly off the handle when challenged and is very, very, very good at waiting for things to cool, for time to pass and then, when it is least expected he serves his revenge.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
A man of steel– a brutal knight he is a gifted and well-trained fighter. He moved fluidly in heavy armour and has mastered sword play. Not only courageous with a sword he is a man large enough to favour other weapons and has been known to wield an axe when a particularly bloody mood takes him. He has speed and stamina, and is a warrior on ground or on horse-back, or even in the water. Pairing this skill with the fact he is a wily tactician, he is a deadly military juggernaut.
Map man- at first maps were just a way to hone his love of strategy, but long years of study became an immense love. He finds enjoyment in drawing maps and using cartography skill outside of his training with his Uncle. Not necessarily a man for adventure, he feels that knowing and having studied the land makes him masterful over it. And that in this way, he has dominance over the land as he does with the people within it. He is well studied of the kingdom and some of the lands beyond it also.
Character History:
Born the second of his generation in the House Deveraux, and of the second son of the prior: much pressure for greatness had been put upon him from an extremely early age. He would later come to realize the he was the eldest male in his age, and that the crown line produced no males. Fate or stupidity would suddenly spiral carefully laid plans, placing the prince and his father in a precarious position when a female successor was later named, putting the stability of the Deveraux reign in jeopardy.
As a young boy, Stephane was subjected to many tutors. Historians and poets taught him basic oration, and gave him the gift of literacy and knowledge of the greater world. Mathematicians and merchants instructed fundamental economics and numbers. Priests for the good of the Architect. His father trained his ambition, calculation, intrigue, and patience. His uncle Jean-Luc; all the makings of a soldier, commander, and strategist.
He often accompanied his father on travels to the many other high courts of the realm on some business or another. He, more so at an older age, was brought in to learn negotiation skill. Though it was his place of birth and his ancestral home, Stephane spent as much time away from the Chateau de Lavande than he did living there, perhaps giving him more of an appreciation of it. He was not often around his cousins during his early youth. As a teenager, his lessons with his uncle took an ever greater precedence, finding himself one of those not deterred by his stand-offish and iron personality. Stephane would join his uncle on various expeditions, routing pirates, bandits and all manner of brigands, taking his first life at fourteen, and suffering his first serious injuries at sixteen: a stray arrow to the thigh, and a pierced shoulder from a javelin that was slow to heal. Of course, He was knighted once he recovered by the marshal, in the presence of the court.
Growing up he had little time for family outside of his own and he viewed his mother and sister from a distance. Women were supposed to be the weaker species, were supposed to deal with the trivial aspects of life- the sick and wounded, to show charity and grace. But with his brother being sent to the Shelbourne, to be ruined by drink and parties, Stephane took care of his little sister. With no interest in drink or women, she often seemed to be the only one capable of drawing out the lighter side of his soul. With her, he had love and softness and often they would talk of things creative. He taught her how to dance, and she taught him much about dancing too. But she also gave him the gift of art, helping him master the pen so that he could better study his cartography. Despite his gentleness with her, Martine was always likely to prefer Emilie – they were too souls that needed saving and Stephane did not have the time or the energy to save them and thus grew in a manner mostly distanced from his family. After all, there was always the goal of King in mind, to wear the crown!
All that was quickly ruined. And the announcement that his Uncle was choosing to put a female in power- well it left a bitter taste in Stephanes mouth. When Nicolette was named heir, a fire that had been burning already in his father, Benoit, seemed to ignite. Now Stephane's suspicions of his 'purpose' had been confirmed. Stephane believed himself to be capable of being an excellent king: just, strong, cunning and willing to make all the difficult decisions necessary to maintain a Deveraux crown. From here, he began to lay the foundation with his father for his own ascension... with little remorse for those in his way. After all…he can’t abide failure.
Writing Sample:
That rotten bitch.
There was something manic hiding under the cold surface of Stephanx blue, icicle gaze. He watched the coronation of Nicolette with a morbid serenity about him. His teeth were tightly clasped together, and occasionally a twitch of inglorious rage double through him as he listened to the wretched woman declare the oath. His oath. This should’ve been his moment, his words, his position, his crown.
That damned, foul, spoilt little whore.
She’d get hers.
Stephane was going to make sure of that.
He’d ruin her. Rip her, demolish her, and destroy her. He would hurt her beyond the most imaginable pain she could summon and then they’d see who was most worthy wouldn’t they? The whole kingdom would see!
As she stepped by him he gave her a smile, the corners of his mouth upturning and knowing she’d feel the icy fingers of his chilled expression.
That rotten bitch.
