Character Name: Deina Fontaine
Age: 20
Gender: Female
Birthdate: November 1, 1408
City / Region: Vielha, Estersea
House [ Birth, Marriage if applicable ]: Fontaine
Played by: Adelaide Kane
Appearance:
Deina has long black hair that is straight as rain, framing a face cast from porcelain. Amber-hued eyes have a tilt, making her appear a little exotic. Tall and slender, she has an eye for color and fabrics that show off her figure to best advantage, plus the accessories that bring the eye to her long neck and slim fingers. She is almost never without some kind of hair band or ornamentation for her hair.
Personality:
Deina is just as independent as the rest of her Fontaine cousins but she also has learned the value of being demure and reserved. On the surface, to some she comes across as icy and aloof, but with her family, she is all warmth, smiles and affection. She is a very loyal girl, openly supportive of her cousin Tamara as the new Countess and believes that the time has come for the ladies of Archades to show that they are just as capable as the men. That does not mean she dis-likes men, only that Deina wants to be taken seriously for her mind and her skills, not just for her beauty.
She has a temper, especially when she is being patronized or condescended to, it really annoys her. So she has a sharp tongue that she is not afraid to use, especially on men when they give her a metaphorical pat on the head.
Deina is a planner who isn't afraid to work but she also likes to have a good time. If they can be done at the same time, that's even better. Knowing that Tamara is counting on her to help the family, she feels some pressure but likes the challenge. Living up to Tamara's standards has raised her own, making her some thing of a perfectionist about everything she does. Some times she takes herself too seriously.
She likes to surprise people with little gifts or special things but does not like to let them know it was her. Deep down, Deina is secretly generous, just wanting to see people happy.
Specific Skills or Abilities:
embroidery and sewing
carding, spinning and weaving wool
court manners
politics
merchant skills
Character History:
The eldest daughter and oldest-born of Edward Fontaine, Deina was the leader of her little family. Where she went, Matthew and her other siblings would try to keep up. It didn't matter where she went, what she did or why, they wanted to do it too. For the most part, Deina didn't let them get into too much trouble, reminded by her parents that as the oldest, she was responsible for the babies, that she couldn't let them get hurt. They depended on her to be sensible, smart and wise.
Those were words she got used to hearing all of her life. Dreaming was a waste of time when she had lessons to learn or tasks to perform, brothers and sisters to help watch or so on. She very quickly learned how to put on a mask and hide what she really thought and wanted from every-one around her. For a long time, Deina truly disliked her brother Matthew, because he was male and in her mind, able to do what he wanted instead of what was expected. It wasn't until he broke his arm that she realized what she had and began to change, taking her studies more seriously. This time also helped to repair her relationship with Matthew, though his apprentice-ship relegated it to many letters and short visits when he came home.
The family was starting to make more money with their trade, and the Count her uncle wanted to make a bigger splash at Court. It was finally revealed to Deina that that was why she was being taught all of what she called the fussy nonsense. She was being prepared to go to court and hopefully help the family there by being named a lady-in-waiting to one of the many princesses there. Suddenly, every-thing had a reason and a purpose, and life became much more endurable with the knowledge that she wasn't wasting time.
This kept her busy and mostly content, glad for the challenges as she began to work more with her mother and aunts since her cousin Tamara was going through physical training and Maria was still too young yet. Promised that she would go to Bordelaix after her twentieth birthday, all of that changed when her uncle and cousin died, making Tamara the new Countess. Deina's focus shifted, keeping herself in Vielha to help her cousin and support her through her grief and the pressure of being Countess. She recognizes her uncle Josef's ambition and knows that Tamara needs as much help and protection that she can give.
Writing Sample:
The Gardiner horses were famous, even in Bordelaix. Wanting to see them, Marie-Louise waited until some of the stable-hands passed before she approached one of the stalls. The head that appeared to sniff made her laugh softly, her hand held palm up for the horse to take her scent in. He was a handsome, proud horse, tossing his head with a whicker and a gleam in his eye that settled when she gently stroked his nose. "Oh, you like that, do you?" Whispered to him, Marie-Louise reached up a little to scratch at the fore-lock.
She thought she was alone, starting to move to the next horse when she felt herself nudged in the back. Looking back, she laughed again. He nudged her again, obviously looking for more attention. Marie-Louise obliged him, talking softly as she scratched and petted, feeling his neck arch. If horses preened, he was definitely doing that, enjoying every minute of it. It was comforting to her. Animals did not judge or talk down to her, or treat her like she was nothing more then a little girl. She couldn't stay too long, but being around the horses was pleasant for her. Some day she would have to learn how to ride...
